a judo black belt came into to the academy and showed some stuff. man tossing ppl plus being tossed is so much fun. its like this strange feeling that you get where your minds like "no i dont want to go airborne. maybe if i do this i wont- whoa shit there i go" and the world spins around you and youre completely powerless.

we did this throw if anyone can tell me it would be great, hand on belt other hand on sleeve or whizzered and you reap the leg and twist your hips. looks cool has FUCK and the guy goes WAAAAAY high. it was awesome.

That throw description actually sounds like 90% of them.:icon_lol:

you can prolly find out in www.judoinfo.com

check under technique then throws.

Harai Goshi?

Sounded more like Uchimata to me, but Q is right, there are many throws which involve reaping the leg, twisting the hip, and sending the guy flying.

The grip is not very relevant, though it is a common grip for Haraigoshi, in my experience.

There are to many with what you have said but here is a list

It could be a variation aswell, there are more than one way to position your arm in throws although it sounds like O Guruma to me, although there are many similar.

Yeah that description is a little vague. When im in BJJ class, they like to have me toss them, they think it's funny. Sadly though we have to use a crash pad since half of them cant do ukemi for shit.

I just resumed training in Judo and thank God I did retain enough of my falling training to spare my life! I've trained a little Judo and Hapkido and evidently I grasped ukemi better than I'd thought. All in all, pretty painless debut. Look forward to many, many more falls in the near future.

The hardest thing for me when I first started Judo was getting used to that weird feeling when getting thrown: The disorientation of you're feet now being where your head was a split-second ago. :D

Until your used to it, having your feet off the ground, and no control over your landing is scary. It's why from a standing position alot of good Judo BB can overcome BJJ'rs with inferior ne waza.

My very first day of judo was really pleasant for me. I came in relaxed, confident that I wouldn't get hurt, and treated getting thrown in the air as a fun experience (which it was for me since most of the guys in our club are 40+ year old ex wrestler dudes that have sick power and technique lol).

Actually the only injuries i've taken at my judo club so far is from grappling, go figure :D

Addicting isn't it? Funny thing is, I usually get more pumped up after being thrown by a good clean, hard forward throw than I do when I'm the one doing the throwing.

Judo, gotta love it.

I'm a BJJ guy, so I have a general question for the Judo guys.

I do this one a lot from turtle. I will turtle up and I will get a guy to over commit an arm to go for a choke, If he gets to high on me I come up a little control the arm and throw him over my shoulder. Are there many Judo throw that can be done from the knees?

Ippon Seoi Nage is a standing throw. Lots of throws in Judo look very similar but are different throws. It's like calling every guard in BJJ "Guard"

so does judo train throws from the knees at all or is it all just variations from other standing judo throws. (not that you would train from your knees, but you may have to use a technique if you end up there)

I've never really trained "throws" from the knees, and I don't understand why anybody would.

You can use some concepts from the throws for reversals and takedowns from the knees, and stuff, but you don't train that.

A very common variation of that throw (colloquially called 'drop seoinage') is done from the knees, and is one you'll see in a lot of olympic hi-lites. But get a good instructor to show it to you (particularly good is the variation in which you throw to the side of the hand on the lapel instead of the arm), timing and springing off your (kneeling) legs is very important in it. BTW, the drop/lapel version is good for BJJ, because even if you miss the throw his hand isn't around your neck (ie you're on the lapel side), and the leg explosion throws you clear so he doesn't have your back.

Another very common from the knees throw is kataguruma (ie your wrestling fireman's carry), as well as a lot of what are called pickups in judo (but called single legs etc in wrestling).
