Hey all,

I'm moving about 2 hours away to Mount Olive, NJ. I'm looking for a place to train there since my school schedule won't allow me to spare the 2 hours drive both ways to train 2-3x per week to my old Kwoon (which I plan on training once a month when I can make time).

I'm mostly interested in Muay Thai but I'm interested in grappling or mixing standup and ground - I've never done it. I have no ground game. I really don't want a swollen ego meathead zone. I'm not really able to spare more than a 30 min. drive. I'm right off of rt. 46. Any suggestions welcome.

Right now candidates are Evolutionary Martial Arts in Hackettstown, NJ and North Jersey Muay Thai in Lodi, NJ

Any others you guys can cook up?

EDIT: North Jersey Muay Thai will be doable only because it's right off of I-80

By the way sorry for the annoying, repetitive question - my curiosity is mainly based in whether or not there are gyms you guys absolutely loathe in Jersey :icon_lol:

I found a few I'd like to try though

i trained at EMA for a while and didnt really like it... but it depends what you are looking for.

the muay thai class is really more of a kickboxing class that is very cardio focused, and probably half or more of your training partners are disinterested highschool kids. plus you wont be able to spar until "level 2"... i trained there for like 5 months and never reached "level 2" because you have to go to some kind of promotion seminar. the instructors are detailed, but sometimes the classes are self-defense based which is kind of weird considering muay thai is not self defense. but again, if you are looking for alot of cardio and some decent striking instruction they are good classes.

the bjj classes are simply not good. the main instructor is a brown belt but he RARELY teaches. the classes are mostly taught by random blue belts, which is kind of absurd considering you are paying alot of money. the blue who taught alot of the classes i attended was an unhelpful dick. he would show several completely unrelated techniques, not help anyone with them, then tell us to roll. no positional sparring or anything.

i really like the main instructor dave, and alot of the other guys there. but i just cant speak well of this place especially since its 200 a month for unlimited classes. thats just too much for very sub par instruction.

if you are willing to drive about 30 miles, check out AMA fight club in whippany. awesome place to train both muay thai and bjj.

Whippany isn't so bad, it should be a cruise down Rt. 10 or so to get there I think? I go to school in Dover :)

Also, have you heard of Trinity MMA in Budd Lake? I passed it today on the way to sign my lease. They advertise Muay Thai on the window.

I've seen some of the NJMT guys fight. They're good.

That's where I would train if I lived in the area.

Thanks for that. I'm going to check out a school right down the street, too. It's a place called Trinity MMA but they have no website. I was spying on them the other night and it looked pretty awesome, sort of small

There's a hayastan grappling school in Budd Lake. I think I'm gonna check out the Renzo School in Denville... kinda far away tho.

How is trinity mma? that is really close to me, and also in Budd lake..
