Question for all you BJJ people out there:

As someone who has never trained MMA before, I was browsing MMA gyms in my state and came across an MMA gym nearby. After a quick google search, the owner seems to have a good reputation within the BJJ community. One thing I found odd though is the gym's site (and pretty much everything that came up on Google) claims he was a 2001 Pan Am Gold Medalist in BJJ, but on the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation official site it says he took 2nd. Is there some common explanation that I might be ignorant of as an outsider to BJJ?

Still better than Ronda's gold medal.

There's a guy that has a gym in my town with literally a 0-14 record in MMA.

IDk maybe he's a great coach but kinda made me not want to train there.

probably harder to find a gym that DOESN'T like about their credentials than it is to find one that does.

Medalist just means you got a medal.... he seems to have not lied.

Hahaha I bet this is actually true, I think all the medals for that event are colored gold so he used a pretty sneaky wording to not "technically" lie and say he got first, but obviously leave the connotation that he got first as "gold medal" at least here in the US is synonymous with 1st place.

Actually I just didn't notice op specified gold medalist... instead of medalist meaning he placed on the podium in his group so oops I messed up. But yeah that is another theory as to why he said that...... leaving the question of if he is lying or not as long as that little dishonesty doesn't snowball into big dishonesty I don't see harm in it may as well train there.

TS, ask around in the grappling forum. They'll be better able to help you.

also have to watch out for watered down black belts

my liniage for example is pretty straightforward
Carlos Sr > Carlos Jr > all of the Machado brothers > Johnny Rodriguez > Me (blue belt) :D

other places have to go down a list of 20 black belts

losers tend to make the best coaches though.

a dude that achieved greatness much due to natural talent and genetics is gonna teach you what exactly ?

Sure, great NFL coaches usually aren't players past maybe HS. But what if the guy has bad technique?
Takes more than genetics and natural gifts to make a champ look at Alexander Emelianenko.

IDK how his fighters do but it's got a very trashy nu-metal vibe to the gym w some really hokey ads. There's also a Gracie school in my town so IDK why anybody would not go there instead.

I agree to a degree, and its a theory that i preach, but 0-14?? Lol
He would teach you resilience and to never stop believing in yourself.... Maybe he's the singer for Journey?

If he wins 1 he should make a ted video on not giving up.

lol true enough, but Tompkins was 0-4 and one of the better mma coaches when he lived. Most coaches have shit records if they even fought in the first place.

A local gym created their own promotion to automatically give their own fighter's belts. Matching their fighters up against guys with records like 0-1, 2-4, etc.

They're like..1-3 in title fights aha

Morning gang, one of my students told me about this post so I figured I'd check it out and see what the fuss was about. Let me start off by saying I don't and would never embellish my accomplishments. I've won a lot and I've lost a lot, not need to oversell it, I have zero ego and no need to BS anyone.

I can see how my Pan Am Victory could be mistaken for embellishment though, since I'm officially listed in 2nd place and the silver medalist. Let me explain why this is. Back in the old days I competed for Team Renzo Gracie, and at that time we were super tight with a team called Gracie Barra. Renzo was trained by the head coach of Barra, Carlos JR, so it makes sense.

Pretty much, long before Barra became a chain of commercial schools, Renzo Gracie and Gracie Barra were considered the same team and when two students from these academies made it to the finals, instead of battling it out, they'd toss a coin to decide who gets first and who gets second.

I made it to the finals of Pan Ams along with my teammate Leandro from Barra, so we flipped for it and I picked tails (Unlucky ERR) and lost the coin toss. Didn't matter to me, I was happy for Leandro all the same.

He was awarded the gold medal and listed as the division winner on paper, and as you guys saw online, also on the IBJJF website. Me in second.

But here's the coolest part for me personally. After the tournament was over, Carlos Gracie JR caught up with me and pulled me aside to talk.

He said he enjoyed watching me compete, and even though i lost the coin toss, we were both the champions of featherweight and after he said that he reached in his pocket and pulled out a shiny gold medal and handed it to me and told me I'd earned it.

He said that since Leandro and I were brothers from the same family, it was only fair to award both of us the gold. Man that was probably the happiest day of my life, still to this day. That was really cool of him, going out of his way to give me a gold medal. Carlos Jr can do no wrong in my eyes, he's a good dude.

So that's why I list Pan Am Gold Medalist in my accomplishments section. Sorry for the confusion guys, hopefully that clears things up. Feel free to email me if you've got questions, [email protected]

And if y'all are ever in the Annapolis MD area by all means stop by my academy and roll around a bit. The more the merrier I always say. annapolismixedmartialarts.com

Oh and I've also included a photo of my gold medal just in case you still don't believe me. I need to fix the damn hook and hang it back up lol. IMG_4238.jpg

Cool story bro!

My problem with bjj coaches is that they often don't understand why we come to them. I don't need my bjj coach to be "the best", so when he talks about submitting all these bjj stars and UFC stars, maybe it's true maybe it's not. I really don't care. I need to learn the basics about how to fight and defend myself. Coaches will tell you elaborate stories. Some of them seem more plausible, others less plausible, but I really don't care. To me, it comes across as pompous self-aggrandizement. At the bar, tell me whatever you want. While we're on the mat and I'm on paid time, less self-aggrandizement and more instruction is always preferred.
