Gus showed incredible TDD in his fight with jones. the only dude dude to really stuff nearly all of Jones Shots and even score a takedown off Jones himself. The even more amazing thing is that he doesn't even come from a wrestling background.

tall lean guys who prefer to win fights using their striking ( like condit and Anderson) have been taken down time and time again even when they work hard on their TDD in the gym they still seem to have the same flaw in their next fights.

So what makes it that Gus all of a sudden has amazing TDD, while Anderson and Condit still seem to have the same problem, no matter how hard they work on it?

Anderson has outstanding TDD technique, but he suffers from being rather physically weak. Even in his most recent loss against Weidman he was easily stuffing him after that first takedown, ditto for the second Sonnen fight.

This is pretty stupid. I don't get the comparison. Why don't all strikers have great TDD?

Training consistently with olympic medalists in wrestling helps.

This (Lidberg etc). Gus also has been training with Phil Davis since 2010 for his wrestling and even trained with Weidman semi-recently. He also trains with fellow countryman Illir Latifi, a (Swedish) national wrestling champion.

Just because they train it doesn't mean they'll get really good at it.

And Silva actually has some pretty good defense. It's just that when he does gets taken down he usually stays there, content to hold on and wait out the round so that he can start fresh in the next one and get finish. Sonnen only took him down 3 times in their first fight, Silva was just never able to get up. And Silva only got up vs. Weidman because they got in a bit of scramble when Chris went for the kneebar.

From my pov some fighters just simply struggles to get good TDD, and don't seem to be able to improve it.

Not to mention that I don't think Condit for example should even need to improve his TDD, his deadly bottomgame should be enough to win him fights if we just improved TD scoring.

I think the best thing a striker could do is immediately try for a takedown himself and throw the wrestler off his game. Just like the reverse worked for sonnen and couture when they came out swinging against Silva and Syvia respectively.

I feel that Condit and silva are content with being on their back due to their ground games. Gustafsson never shown a game off his back while Condit and Silva have.

Condit is working Tdd after being through questionable decisions like with Hendricks, so his TDD might be stellar now.

I'm not too sure about Silva. He defended some shots, but at his current age, he might be able to learn much more.

So,stuffing Chael and Weidman making them look like crap means having bad TDD??

Anderson won despite getting taken down in fights. And he ended up beating everybody besides Weidman who ended up taking rounds via top control. And he ended up finishing just about every fighter who decided to stand with him. This led to 10 title defenses.

Sounds like Gustaffson should be a taking a page out of Anderson's book.

anderson silva was champ for a long time
condit tok a interim belt, which is commendable

perhaps gus could learn a thing or two from these two former champs

It's not all of the sudden. Many people, and I mean many were posting gifs of Gus' loss to davis as evidence for gus' poor wrestling. Those of us who actually watched the fight knew that he had solid TDD even back then. That was before he started training MMA full time, before he brought in olympic wrestlers and phil Davis. Logic would indicate that if you take someone who already had decent TDD, and have them train 3 and a half years with top wrestlers, soley for improving TDD, that someone will come out with great take down defense.

The condit issue is a mystery. I LOVE Condit, but he had like 9 months to prepare for the best wrestler in the division, another 3 months to prepare for another top wrestler, and then like another 5 months to prepare for a fighter whom he previously lost to because of his poor TDD. yet his TDD barely looks better than 2 years ago.

It just comes easier to some people I guess. If condit's TDD doesn't improve within the next year, I'd say it isn't going to get much better.

Gustafsson has good TDD because he trains with good wrestlers.

Gustafsson has GREAT TDD because he controls range well with his footwork and boxing.

Anderson has always been a counterpuncher. Condit is balls to the wall flying knees everywhere. Gustafsson's TDD style doesn't work for them.

Condit does get taken down a lot, but after martin got him down in their last fight, he started shrugging off many of his attempts later in the fight

he was taken down by every collegiate wrestler he faced
(Hendo, Chael in 2 fights, Weidman)

So Anderson and Condit need to point fight more is what you are saying? Yeah, that worked great for Condit last time, popularity wise.
