Perhaps the best fighter to come out the infamous Lions Den, this man had his share of short comings. An all American boy, buff, good hands with power, sneaky kicks and good take down defense. Need less to say this man's short comings all began with his fight with the legendary Sakuraba. He fought the man neck and neck, yet Pride officials started this man's collection of short comings, you saw the fight, do I need to really get into detail?

Now fast forward to a fight with Wanderlei, he held his own then got head butted by a savage! Eventually stopped by Mr Silva.....fought the Ice man, was really handing him a kickboxing lesson...even dropped the Iceman and then yes...yet again got caught with a haymaker. Fought Arona, don't see how he lost this fight....stuffed the takedowns and rocked the muscled Brazilian.

There you have it, Guy Mezger was a stand up guy, a real fighter who just was at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Nice, I sure wish Guy Mezger made it to the third fight with Tito Ortiz. He made the right move in retiring, you don't mess with a stroke

He was well and truly on his way out when Wand headbutted him, the headbutted was just the icing on the cake

The judges were not kind to Mezger or Bustamante.

Mezger/Arona was a questionable decision but I think Mezger/Rogerio was correct, perhaps Guy would have won under US judging but Rogerio was clearly the aggressor standing landing more significant strikes.

Generally I think that was Guys problem, he had power but needed too long to land it which left openings for opponants.

Headbutts were legal in Pride when Wand and Mezger fought, just putting that out there.

no it wasnt. headbutts were never legal in Pride.

Quadros said something about it during the replay but they didnt nag about it because that match was full of awesomeness and the outcome would have been the same

Well at least Guy had two pecs, unlike one lousy Lions Den fighter....

Don't like him but he was (is?) a pretty solid fighter. Good standing, good on the ground, good in transition. Well-rounded and good.
Not talked about a lot considering his level.

Without a doubt the best fighter from the Den. I love Saku, but god damn they robbed Mezger so hard. I made a thread about it way back. Such a confusing moment.

well the Saku fight was obviously a bit of a travesty. but he could have just fought the extra time and won the fight. it wasn't fair, but life isn't always fair. I am also skeptical of following Ken Shamrock's advice at any time. I am not sure what, if anything, Guy has said about his decision to quit that fight.

I was always a Guy fan. People may forget that he was a real mainstay of the early 2000 Pride cards. Also obviously had success in the UFC.

IMO - he was just a guy who was never quite good enough and didn't get any breaks.

My sense is that he has had a really good post-fight career and I am really happy for him
