Just read Gustafsson's comments defending Swedish fighters after Fight Night 53. This post isn't about Sweden's MMA scene but about one of his comments.

2000cals for lunch for Americans. Sounds about right

Obviously he means that the process of dieting starts with weeks of anticipation and, only for the last few days of weight cutting then, yes, they eat very little and it gets harder.

How it was worded didn't make sense and I wondered if it was mistranslated or something.

I know fighters eat and drink very little in the last few days when cutting weight but they're also not training 2-3 times a day by then. It just made me curious what the caloric intake of fighters in the middle of camp was.

Unfortunately for you, Gus isn't American and I doubt very much he thinks only Americans are "normal people".

Hes probably exaggerating, but when i cut for a fight i ate 1000-1200 calories a day, while training multiple times a day

It sucks, but as a pro athlete, your job is to go it there for the entertainment of others. They can judge or applaud all they want, theyre the ones paying your salary

If you fought, it would seem even fighters often don't differentiate between dieting and cutting weight. I only wrestled in school and that was a long time ago but we always considered "cutting weight" to be what's done in the final day before competition. Basically what the fighters do when dehydrating to lose water weight.

I'd be surprised as hell if top fighters are living on only 1000-1200 calories a day while in training. Unless they start camp way overweight and out of shape and have to go on a strict diet.
Just a quick google search shows a 170-pound male should consume between 2,210 and 2,550 calories daily for weight maintenance. It's going to vary a lot depending on activity. Training 2-3 times a day is very active.

I've seen a lot of fighters mention the dieting as part of the weight cut, and I can kind of see why if you have to follow a strict diet that you usually don't in between camps. Conor recently spoke on the tortures of dieting for a fight lol

Ronda use to eat one meal a day and blueberries during camps to get to 135 before she hired a nutritionist

2000 calories for dinner to make up for not eating breakfast (just an XXXL iced coffee, with sugar, cream and mocha-caramel flavoring and whipped cream on top) and a light lunch (regular Big Mac combo with a diet soda....that's practically 0 calores for lunch, too).

I think this offers more proof of how unhealthy it is for fighters to be dieting and cutting to weight classes way lower than their walking around weights. Holy shit! That seems nuts to believe you can train well when you're not getting enough fuel to do it. No wonder so many fighters take PEDs.

I think a lot of fighters just don't have enough education on proper dieting and nutrition. Ronda now eats several meals a day, has gained some lean muscle mass, and makes weight easily. A Proper nutritionist and/or diet makes a huge difference, but I agree that some people cut way too much weight

It’s nothing but hard training 2-3 time a day and a weight cut for 8-10 weeks where the fighters eat less during a whole day than a normal person do for just lunch."

His comments seem to combine dieting down and cutting weight but eating less for 8-10 weeks than most normal people eat for lunch? How the hell could fighters train 2-3 times a day on that? Unless he thinks most people are consuming 2000-3000 calories a day for lunch?

Does anyone have an idea or examples of what fighters eat while in training? Obviously it's going to be different for someone coming in to camp way overweight than someone in shape but you still have to have enough fuel to train.

When I was prepping for mma fights while dieting i still ate 3000+ calories a day and lost weighing because of so much training. Weight cutting the week of sucks donkey balls and you are really hungry but its only a week. Typically im about 165 all the time, 160lbs 2 weeks out and cut around 12 lbs of water weight for a fight at 145lbs.

If that is really how they diet and train in Sweden they have a lot to learn.

The Godfather of Swedish MMA is not impressed.
