Guild Wars 2 Just Went F2P

I enjoyed the game for about 100 hours. Reading about their outright disdain for the community and the way they banned people for perceived exploits was hilariously bad.

It's true that feedback from the community falls on deaf ears.

Interesting. I was really looking forward to playing it when it first came out, but I never got around to downloading it. Anyone know the approximate file size? Patches included?

I'm pretty sure it's over 20gig.

Any of y'all - or anyone else play it ?

It going f2p might get me to check it out. Been wanting to but didn't want to pay the price just to find out if I like it.

Anything a total noob should know before firing it up ?

A few things to note about the game:

No such thing as kill stealing. Everybody gets credit, so pile on.

Public quests (Hearts) are open to everyone all of the time. You can track your party member's progress even. When they're completed, they're permanently completed for your character.

Zone completion is a big deal and you get good stuff for doing it.

As far as resources go, everybody gets their own instance of things. No need to worry about people stealing your nodes.

Harvest everything. You get XP for doing it.

Public events are a great way to get loot & XP. They happen frequently and can give some pretty good rewards in some cases.

I don't think there's much UI customization, but I haven't really played for a while so that could very well have changed. May get back into it after the expansion drops.

I was super hyped for this game. Ended up being pretty disappointing to me. It's not a bad game but it didn't really draw me in. The original gameplay vids looked awesome but the actual combat didn't really play like it (or at least didn't feel as fun as it looked). Game felt incredibly random and pointless. I ended up doing a free story quests and mostly just going to different zones and finding all the landmarks and shit. Almost felt like a never ending fetch quest. The random events are cool idea but they are so frequent it becomes boring.

Might give it another try sometime. It felt like they had good ideas but the execution was off. Like they wanted to cram so much shit in the game but ended up making it feel all unnecessary.

Played at launch for a few months. My guild quickly dominated the RVR maps, and then the game just felt pointless. The game has some interesting combat mechanics with the weapon swapping and dodge functions, but at the end of the day, it just felt like another MMO with more focus on RVR and public quests.

Bought the game , played to about level 20 and quickly got bored then quit.

Not longer after quitting i started getting emails that there were attempted log ins to my account from an unknown IP ( not my ip )

I followed all their procedures , changed my password ,attempted to change my email associated with the account but couldnt do so without opening a ticket and navigating through their absurd and failed security structure.

Wasn't log after that my account (that i no longer played) was banned for " account misuse" whatever that means.

So clearly the account was hacked and stolen , then I can only assume used by gold spammers.

The game sucked and I couldnt care less about losing access to it , my only concern was removing my email from their database which I couldnt do.

Upon browsing their forums it was clear that this was a widespread problem that they handled very poorly. They had some security breach which resulted in numerous compromised accounts. But rather than announce it like other companies do it appears they just ignored it.

In conclusion

The Game Sucked bad , probably the worst MMO I've ever played and the only one I failed to reach max level in for sheer boredom.

And It's managed by a bunch of asshats.

Fuck guild wars

You're a WoW vet if i remember right, so there are a few differences like a more active combat system that makes use of dodging and blocking depending on what weapon you have and your class, but significantly less skills overall. Only 5 per weapon.

Aside from the main questline, the rest of the game is based around dynamic events that happen around you and that you can participate in, with the result of the event leaving some sort of impact on the game world e.g. a village being conquered by centaurs and thus effecting local trade.

Graphically it's ahead of WoW, and the animations are a lot nicer, but then WoW is from the early 00s and GW2 came out in 2012. I think you'll appreciate the game world a bit more, and there is an emphasis placed on exploration through Points Of Interest and Vista achievements.

How's the UI customization?
It's pretty standard, and you can tweak a few things. Some more options were added recently i think, but i've never played around with the UI before.

The base game is going free to play because there is an expansion coming out, this was one of the major problems on how they were going to deal with expansions.

At first they tried their living story strategy to release expansion content but players found that too slow.

Then I guess they settled on a boxed expansion but with GW2's model it would split the playerbase so they came up with a clever method of including the base game with the expansion and then making the base game free to play.

I personally think with all the changes to GW2 such as more endgame focus and instanced raids, leagues etc this is where GW2 should have been at launch.

We'll still have to play the content and the new classes to see if the meta has actually gotten better and if the raids are actually engaging but this is a good change.

GW2 is a good game, it lacks a lot of things but for the price of the game it's really good. GW2 has gone under the radar since launch, echohead mentions the bans for exploits at launch, that was three years ago no one even remembers that or talks about it before.

It's not relevant to the current game, it's similar to AngryJoe's Dirty Bomb rant which and how people perceive the game based on that video, it's simply not relevant.

I played the game for about 2 years after launch, did all the content, got pretty much everything but I never really enjoyed the game that much because the PVE meta and instanced content was so lacking. However with the new specialisations, masteries and instanced raids there is a chance they could redeem themselves. I wasn't going to buy the expansion at first but now I might.

Sounds cool, thanks

the game is f2p but with restrictions, here is a list of what that entails

here is a good introduction on how the combat works and classes

personally ive played the game since it was launched and as for mmos goes this has kept me hooked even after trying all the mmos that came out after gw2

ever since i played this i had a hard time getting back to the more traditional mmo combat system like WoW etc, just feels so static compared to gw2 but thats just me
