At first I thought he was just unable to finish guys.

But this fight proved he doesn't even try anymore, imo. He said himself he could have taken Nick's back multiple times, but chose not to. He held on from the side and didn't do much. You aren't going to finish anyone like that.

He's definitely an effective fighter (obviously) but he's never going to stop anybody at this rate. No sub attempts, not much hard GnP.

Some of the best shots landed were his elbows from top in round 1. If he landed them all fight he would be putting guys away. But he stops throwing them, why? You aren't going to get armbarred off a few short elbows Georges, come on. This is a fight, and those elbows are packing some force.

He beats anyone at WW easily, but does everyone agree that he's not trying to finish fights at all?

inb4 butthurt. It should be clear I like GSP but I know he can do more, as does anyone else with 2 eyes.

I haven't seen his second fight with BJ forever and watched it yesterday. It shocked me at how brutal and effective his Gnp was. I feel like he could have done so much more to Diaz. I don't know if he's lost his drive or has just adopted a lnp gameplan on purpose to cement his legacy

actually getting diaz's back would not be effective. he tried lots of high kicks , some left hooks, few elbows when he got the positions

this pretty much

GSP dominates people but doesn't seem to have that killer instinct of late, perhaps even longer. I'll have to trawl through his fights to make a much more accurate analysis but yeah, he should amp up the tempo when in a good position imo.

If gifted an opportunity he would take it, but nothing involving risks for GSP

Gsp hasnt finished anybody in 5 years. Unless you count bj quitting, then 4 years. He hasnt gotten an actual ko/tko or submission since the second Matt Serra fight.

How would getting his back be any less effective than holding on from the side? Hell, even in full mount he was barely landing.

He does hes just fighting guys who rarely get finished. Diaz, Condit, Shields those guys are tough.

I think he will get beat by Hendricks.

I hope I'm wrong but all top fighters need to worry about is a take down. Johny is a top wrestler with unreal power. You know your not going to be finished so you can take risks.

Gsp needs to learn how to hammerfist. He needs to take the odd risk because I'm sure he has the ability to sub people

"Killer instinct" is a myth imo. Some guys take risks to finish fights, some don't. Its not some special attribute that fighters have. It comes back to a)the gameplan and b) the mentality of the fighter

Agree. And GSP is my favorite fighter. Maybe not so much anymore. Its getting stale.

This as well. I did the stats before this fight, and of the 130 odd fights that his opponents (from his recent string of decisions) have fought, they have only been finished 11 times. So on stats alone, GSP only has <10% chance of a finish

Also everyone is so much better at negating GNP.

I'm surprised he doesn't throw more head kicks. One thing GsP shouldn't be worried about is being taken down

I like the guy but every UFC where he fights I think 'oh man, he hates Diaz, this fight is going to be brutal', and you get the exact same thing.

Not taking his back, a tactical move. Not really committing to GnP at all, no sub attempts. 5 rounds of action, no sub attemps, not really any hard shots landed.

I don't know what to say. I think it's PURELY a mental fault he has, it's not technical or physical problem, obviously..

Rather play it safe then go for a position and risk getting reversed.

When you think about it, for every title fight that GSP takes part in, he walks away with around $5,000,000. Can you blame him for taking the path of least resistance? If I had a chance at $5M, i wouldn't be taking any risks either

Why?
A leopard doesn't change its spots.
GSP will never fight with reckless abandon.
This is partly your fault for expecting it, in all honesty.

GSP should lay it on the line, but if you actually expect him to, you're crazy.

He doesn't fight to finish. I never saw him go for a submission the whole fight or throw strikes that looked like they were meant to finish. GSP did set ups to pretty much end up in dominant positions the whole fight and then he just held there. That's what GSP does and I got used to it already.
