" Born and raised in Webster, New York, Gillespie attended Webster Schroeder High School where he was a standout in wrestling, winning two state titles. He continued wrestling for Edinboro University, where he was a four-time NCAA Division I All-American and won a national championship in 2007. He was the first true freshman All-American in school history, and also holds the school record for most career wins (152), most wins as a freshman (40), and highest winning percentage (.917). He graduated from Edinboro with a bachelor's degree in individualized studies and a concentration in psychology.[2][3] He was an assistant coach at Hofstra University. "

This guy got some insane wrestling pedigree. Considering his last couple fights, It seems his skill has translated in MMA pretty smoothly and he does not shy away from striking exchange either.

Future Contender... Very Possible.

Nice, I think Khabib and Gillespie are pretty different fighters. Gillespie likes to pass to better positions, Khabib doesn't care and is usually content just to damage and not finish.

Khabib passes a lot ,he moves through the guard like butter.

It depends on who he is against, vs Johnson he passed a lot because Johnson has a poor bottom game, but with Barboza, he was content to stay in half guard and just punch him, he resorted to folkstyle half guards and turks etc. Both are good levels though.

A what studies?<bball1>

I’m from Long Island, it’s interesing he says from Long Island Ny when he’s from Webster. W batter is upstate. He went to Hofstra college which is Long Island..

He prob thinks he’ll get more fan backing saying he is from Long Island.

Bermudez is really from the Island. Same with weidman

But can he take a one of these to the face

He can’t be khabib because his striking is good.

Meh, what makes Khabib different is that he's a judo black belt and was doing Sambo since birth.

Unless this GIllespie kid was doing BJJ while in diapers, then he's just another high level American wrestler who is trying out for MMA.

It's not like Cejudo and Blaydes are lighting up their divisions right now.

I really like him. Besides his wrestling background his bjj looks really slick and he's got decent hands too. Only potential issue I see is that he looks tiny. Might have to consider 145 eventually.

What does "bachelor's degree in individualized studies" mean?

Is "Individualized Studies" really a major?

He's my favourite prospect in any division right now, really good fighter.

Very different from Khabib in terms of style but I really like this guy. I hope He keeps doing well.

He caught my eye with that last quick KO he did, then I found out how good wrestler he was.

Id like to see him smash Krause for some reason

Cejudo is ranked #2, 12-2 record, only losses to the 125 g.o.a.t. and a split decision to the 125 #2 o.a.t.

It basically means I'm an athlete but have to attend these classes so name this degree whatever the fuck you want

I got to train with him about 3 years back. His isthe tightest front headlock game I've ever felt. Absolute beast and he was a nice dude
