Greatest wins in boxing history?

Biggest Win in History

ya, no shit. Huge win.

Max might get the shit end of the stick more than anyone in boxing history, at least with the casuals i know.

Remembered as an arrogant Nazi who got whooped.

Wasnt a Nazi, or at least, not really. Joe and him got on great. Oh ya, and most people dont know he also beat Joe Muthafuckin Louis in his prime, or at least real close.

edit - saved two jewish kids by hiding them in his house, and refused to fire his jewish trainer, openly defying Hitler. Fuck. This guy’s name got done dirty.

After the rematch, Hitler sent Max to war as a paratrooper.

Imagine that, a 200+ lbs guy with two cracked vertibrea he sustained in his second fight with Joe, sent to be a paratrooper. Hitler wanted him dead.

Max survives the war. Opens a Coca Cola bottling plant and distribution in Germany. Becomes crazy rich.

Dies at 99.

Holmes vs Norton
Foreman vs Frazier
Whitaker vs Chavez ( not Chavez best weight , but sort of fits imo )

I thought this guy was fucking around but all of this is actually true. Godspeed Max Schemling.

Morales over Pacman

Was Pacquiao considered that much better than Morales at the time? I kinda fell Morales was the biggest fighter of the two at that time, pretty much was its last stand before a 4 fight losing streak (incluiding 2 vs Pac).

In recent memory- Marquez knocking out Pacquiao, Hopkins humiliating Tarver, Floyd beating Oscar, Floyd embarrassing Canelo, Pacquiao stopping Berrera, Winky upsetting Shane back to back.

Duran over Leonard 1
Frazier over Ali 1
Leonard over Hearns 1
Floyd over Canelo (that win is aging well, but maybe I am still premature)
Schemling over Louis 1 (everyone saw Max as a stepping stone, a past it name who never got as far as other HW's)
Leonard over Hagler
Ali over Foreman might be the biggest
Douglas over Tyson 42:1 odds, most casinos wouldn't even take bets

^Seeing a Greb av, Greb over Tunney.

Canelo wasn't close to his prime though.

Tyson was slipping, but that's obviously in retrospect.

Agree on the others.

What about RJJ vs Toney?

Although didnt Toney have some excuse? Not sure if it was legit.

Holyfield Tyson 1

Douglas/Tyson

(sorry, I grew up in the 90’s)

Which fight did Rocky Marciano have a HUGE open gash on his brow then finished the bout via ko? Story is he almost fainted when he say his face.

Benn vs. McClellan. McClellan was supposed to be the SMW Mike Tyson and was seen as unbeatable. McClellan's odds to win the fight were 1-3. That is a huge favourite. But was McClellan medically ok? His sparring partner said that Gerald had claimed he got a thumb in the eye and had to stop sparring and that he was doing a lot blinking which also happened in the Benn fight. So there is a big question mark over McClellan's health. But without that, it's one of the biggest upsets ever.

By great wins I mean wins versus an ATG fighter who:
  • Is in their prime
  • Isn't at a significant size disadvantage
  • Isn't injured
  • Isn't moving up or down in weight (e.g. Jones vs Tarver)
  • Extra points for winning in dominating fashion
Two that come to my mind are Ali vs Foreman and Hagler vs Hearns. JMM's KO win vs Manny was great, although that wasn't absolutely peak Manny.

Others?

Great wins are too many and others will go there but I’ll do earthshattering / extremely big wins carrying boxing as an institution significance.
I'll talk only 60s afterwards.......in no particular order.

Ali vs Liston
Frazier vs Ali
Ali vs Foreman
Pryor vs Arguello
Duran vs Leonard 1
Leonard vs Hearns 1
Chavez vs Rosario
Hopkins vs Trinidad
Foreman vs Moorer
Fury vs Wilder 2

I’ve left out probably half a dozen more but this is off the top of my head.

The absolute biggest and best win imo, in all ~150 odd years is Ali vs Foreman whilst the biggest peak vs peak, p4p vs p4p and at the absolute right time would be Duran vs Leonard 1.

I do have to give a special mention to probably the most (or top 3) culturally significant one, Jack Johnson vs Jess Willard. Though obviously not peak for both athletes.
Since now I’ve mentioned the old timers, gotta mention Dempsey vs Tunney 2.

And that’s that.
