Having seen them upwards of seventy times between 1980 and 1995, I'm putting in a vote for the good old Grateful Dead.

American through and through. Greatest cover band ever, a ton of great songs in many styles, great choices.

Could play country and folk convincingly, then later in the same show Jerry would shred over an odd time signature which would transition into a slow, soulful blues number followed by Good Lovin' etc.

There were so many magical nights when they were "on" and played the best you ever heard them...

The only reason they shouldn't be on the list is they might not be a "rock band". They're an amazing band.

Hard to pick from the list though. The Rolling Stones might be the best pure rock band though.

Even now after over twenty years, I remember moments from lots of them. Branford Marsalis guesting and playing so well it was like he had always been in the band.

    Santana and Jerry trading solos.

The return of Dark Star, when we cheered for the first five minutes and almost drowned out the first verse.

My first show, Halloween 1980 at Radio City.

Misfits is my favorite band, but from your list i'd say Black Sabbath. I would include Iron Maiden on the list, too.

Smashing Pumpkins in their prime (mellon collie / siamese dream era) were in my opinion one of the most solid, versatile and creative bands out there and my vote would go for them.

If only they were on the list

How is U2 or radiohead on this list?

Can we add more of their equals, like Alien Ant Farm?

Animals As Leaders.... Certainly one of the best guitarists and drummers playing live today.

My favorite has always been Led Zep. Shitty for the other bands if they plagiarized.

I looked into it once, it's not anywhere near as bad as people were saying. For some reason Bob Dylan gets a pass for straight xeroxing entire songs note-for-note with same exact lyrics but Led isn't allowed to take a few notes and build an entire 99% new song off of it

Isn't it because Bob Dylan is a dick so unsavory things done by him are almost expected?

Led Zeppelin, for sure. Their first six albums were all killer, no filler. While you can struggle to come up with a top 10 songs list for most bands, you really need more like a top 50 for Led Zeppelin.

Yeah, should take Nirvana out and replace them with Alice in Chains since they were a better example of the "Seattle sound", or even better take U2 out.

The Stairway to Heaven claims are pretty ridiculous. Like people saying they "stole" the song from Taurus by Spirit. If anything, Spirit "stole" that song from Cry Me a River by Davy Graham. Stairway to Heaven blows both songs away, anyway. Incredible song which keeps building and building, it's very appropriately named.

Aerosmith and The Doors are better candidates than many of these. Sabbath and Metallica shouldn't be on this list.
