I just got my first case of cellulitis, doc says probably staph or strep. Anti-biotics seem to be working so maybe it is not one of the resistant strains.

I was thinking of getting some of that kenshield stuff or some special anti-bacterial spray or soap but after reading this article i am not so sure, your thoughts?

http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/.../Antibacterial_cleaning_products?OpenDocument

In case you can't be bothered to RTFM, here is a quote from the bottom of the article
"Things to remember "

Evidence suggests that the use of antibacterial and antimicrobial cleaning products

cellulitis? isn't that the stuff old ladies get on their bums

haha, that's what i said to my doctor... He said no, that's cellulite... Cellulitis is an infection of the dermis (in your skin), when everyone says they have a "staph infection" it is mostly cellulitis. Normally caused by staph or strep bacteria

i take a shower as soon as i get home, but i have a 35-40 minute drive to get home

1. thats awful.. take a shower at the gym if you can, or wash up in the bathroom RIGHT after class. but I do applaud your dedication for driving that far to train. I have guys at my school who do that, but we have showers.

2. the article seems to be along the line of, 'don't do it or else we'll have a super disease that will wipe out humanity.' which I've never bought into, but I'm also washing with anti-bacterial every day right after class haha

Kenshield is garbage it doesn't work as good as they woudl like you to think. It does help, but not much.

I would say the biggest thing you can do is make sure you was with an antibacterial soap (doesn't have to be special) a bar of safeguard or any cheap thing would do, then pay close attention to any type of open wound. A scratch, a cut, a zit anything, because that is the easiest way to get soemthing.

As far as the drive, if you can't shower at the gym some antibacterial wipes after you workout would help then shower when you get home,

Feh, I got fungus on my legs from some asshole with nasty feet.

OT... but I have my orange belt now so no one can flame me.

i occasionly get matburn on the tops of my toes, so i am gonna wear socks... i noticed someone else at class does, so why not, I already wear a rash guard and gi, so the feet and hands are really the only exposed parts other then my head... I don't beleive there is any showers at the gym if i recall correctly... just a toilet... i might just take a extra water bottle filled with detol and just detol my feet and hands before i drive home maybe... p.s. i get changed straight after class and dry myself and put on dry clothes

hey nasty , i train there and i assure you its not a dirty mat. ive been training there for 2 years and never had a skin problem.

the only dirty thing about our training was the other night when rodrigo farted whilst armbarring hugo.

wrong.

I got a mean case of foliculitis(infection of the hair folicals) from somebody in bjj. i bought a rashguard and havent gotten anything since

from what i have read, 30% of people, clean or not have staph on their skin, so it's no biggie, if i get an open wound i will make sure it gets a dose of disinfectant... yeah that was soo wrong when rodrigo let rip... and hugo tapped out from it too, lol

I suffered from multiple infections freshman year of wrestling. The next year i used KenShield everyday before practice and took a hot shower as soon as poosible, i didnt get one red mark all season.

You should have made the thread title Grappling With Bacteria!

I didnt read the article but yes it is true that the overuse of antibiotics has causes microbes to become more resistant.

In the past 50 years the percentage of resistance in most microbes has gone up around %600. There are plenty of things you could use that arent antibiotic based but are antibacterial and they will kill it all of if you apply it within about 30 min.
