hey guys i posted a question half a year ago asking about acne.

basically starting a year ago my body exploded in ridiculous acne. I had never had it before and it has got to have been one of the most annoying experiences for me. I'm not in my teens but early twenties.

so back a couple months ago i took some BJJ classes and of course id idnt know if it exasperated it or not for sure (since i was already gettin destroyed by acne)

HOWEVER, i did notice that i started to get crazy acne on my CHIN also, which i had never gotten before. this is only after like 2 classes or so! but i still didnt know whether to attribute it to BJJ.

Fastforwawrd half a year later and now im almost completely clean, except for a few spots.

i went to a wrestling class and i was kinda glad cuz that glass i dint end up gettin my face mashed on the ground or stiff arms too much. however there WAS contact..we however did mostly takedown and takedown D.

so the next morning almost immediately i have pimples all over my lower chin, and the day after that more pronounced. so now im SURE grappling caused it somehow.

my question is

1) back then someone stated how he had a "period" where his face and body had to get used to the grappling, then the acne kinda faded...is this true for you guys?

2) im not willing to go through that horrible experience again, but i want to grapply SO DAMN BADLY. any suggestions?

thanks, and i know its a long post, my bad.

im sure its acne. its been about a week and a good portion of the pimples are gone.

i washd my face right after.

i also doused my chin in proactive lotion and another prescribed treatment.
which i think helped it die fast. i had basically NO pimples at the time, but then they popped up right after that class.

i heard it could also be a hormone thing since my bodys goin thru something its never done before...

Do you do anything else physical during your normal week? Is grappling all you do that causes you to sweat?

Sounds to me like you have what doctors call "Grapne"...jk...

It could be a combination of things. I used to have that problem while wearing sparring gear during TSD sparring sessions, and through trial and error, I just found out that during that stage, I just had really sensitiv skin. I tried all that proactive stuff, which tends to be SUPER strong, and bad for people like you and me, and seem to further exacerbate the issue, creating even more zits, cuz your skin will try to compensate from its new dryness by excreting more skin oil. What I suggest for you is a really relaly mild face wash, such as "Cetaphil". This stuff is magic, because it only costs 5-6 bucks at any Grocery store like target, walmart, HEB (if you have those), Walgreens, and the like. It is also scentless and dyless, which are two other thigns that tend to aggravate sensitive skin. I would also recommend using some kind of scrub for your face, to get all of that crap outta your pores after bjj, since if you have pimples, they are probably holding in some of that dirt after practice, even if you do already wash your face afterwards.

Try this and see if it works for you. All I know is that now Im 26 and I dont have zits anymore, and all I do now is just wash my face with cetaphil after practice, and thats it. Other than that, just water and a towel. My skin seems to not react well to the fancy stuff. Also could be your diet and a combination of other thigns...just experiment and see what gets results, and maybe visit a dermatologist, theyll be able to provide much more insight to your specific needs. Have fun man, and dont let some zits come between you and the mat. I say fuck the zits, cuz in the end, the confidence you will gain from Martial Arts greatly outweighs the zits, lol...

Grappling will not cause Acne that is 100% sure. You began to have Acne extremely late in life its to do with hormones in the body not a Virus and usually pubescent teens get Acne.

It may have been Acne to begin with but now could be an infection created from the damage to the skin from the Acne that has allowed maybe an allergy or infection to grab hold.

When I have got ring worm I use bleach. I have found dettol soap works great at killing off skin infections and for helping with Acne.

A lot of people get a rash simliar to a heat rash from all the sweat and abrasion

In addition to hormones and sweat, diet is a big contributing factor to acne, especially water consumption. Even if you are washing your face for dear life (which itself can cause more skin aggravation), if you are dehydrated (which you most likely are from grappling) you are more likely to see a break out. Your body needs water to keep your skin healthy; part of healthy skin in flushing out all that junk that causes acne. Try this for a while (I received all of this info. from a Dermatologist):

- Drink a ton of water. Far more than you think you should. If you aren't sure if you are drinking enough, check your urine. If it isn't clear (or close to it), you aren't drinking enough water.
- Take a hot shower as soon after training as possible.
- Use Gold Dial Liquid Soap. Not anything fancy; just the antibacterial Dial liquid soap. Don't use Proactive or any spot medication. Don't use bar soap. Just Dial liquid soap.
- If your skin is really dry after showering, you can use a moisturizer.

It seems simple because it is, but I promise it works.

Let me know if that helps.

hey guys, thanks for the replies.

thing is...after the crazy acne period. it was almost GONE. i had some on my body, but on my face it was virtually non-existant. THEN i suddenly got several pimples under and on my chin area all over, after the practice.

so im guessing SOMETHING caused it in the practice.

i did go to a derm...she just gave me retina and some medication a while ago, ddint really give much input regarding the cause or anything..she wasnt sure herself.

this sucks...i had been waiting so long to finally be able to train

I say just train man, do what TheKieth and myself suggested, keep it simple and routine, and check your diet. The water thing Kieth said also works amazingly. That was antoher thing I changed, and my skin has been clear for a long time now. Just try things out, and take better care of yourself, and itll start paying off. Keep rollin man, dont give up!

take it from me. i've always had acne until 20, i started training again and it's back. only on my neck and it pisses me off. but after 3 weeks of training it's gone back down considerably.

When you work hard, like grappling, it's not just the contact from other people. it's also hard work and your body is excreting all the bad **** that's been sitting under your skin. since your acne isn't as bad as mine, i say u should train hard, every day if you can, and get all the * out of you. and stay away from fast food. if i ate that greasy * then worked out it'd not just go to the toilet it will go to where ur most likely to break out, and wait for you to work it out, then acne is there.

so yes there is a "period" where u adjust, ur skin adapts AND ur working all the bad toxins out.

to be honest if BJJ gave me acne from head to toe i still wouldn't stop

Training definitely gives me mild acne. I'm no doctor but I'm assuming it just thrives on the sweat/greasiness/skin irritation. Don't know what to tell ya.

Imagine being 17 and grappling every day.. I have acne everywhere on my face and back. I have been doing it for almost two years and I still can't find anything that works well on it, even perscription stuff..

I used to have terrible acne so I feel your pain bro. Water, water, and more water. And watch your diet if you don't want junk constantly building up in your body and clogging your pores. I used to break out a lot on my chin and throat so shaving really sucked. I switched to a shave oil called Shave Secret (so don't tell anyone about it) and that helped.
Keep training. I've never known of someone who regretted doing BJJ in spite of discomfort and the like, but I have heard people express regret that they let something stop them.

What's your diet like? Believe it or not the foods you eat is a huge factor in acne.
