I have a question nerds. Did Tarkin outrank Vader. You see scenes were he orders Vader.

Example 1. Vader is chocking a Admiral. Tarkin yells at him too release him at once. Vader does immediately.

Example 2. Leí tells Tarkin that she suspected of him holding Vaders leash.

Yes or No.

I always wondered this also? In Return of the Jedi Vader never took shit from that pecker head Moff Jerjerrod who was the chief of the new Death Star , so why was he taking orders from that old fart who couldn't even use the force?

It would appear so.

Perhaps it was respect. Tarkin had been in charge for a long time.

Grand Moffs had command over entire sections of the Galaxy I thought

He's also referred to as "Governor Tarkin" by Leia, indicating a political rank.

The link that explained the relationship between commisars in the USSR and generals says it pretty well.

Vader is a personal enforcer for the Emperor, his authority is based on whatever the Emperor says. If he's like "obey this dude" Vader does it, if the Emperor says "you have total command over this" he's got it

He was personally tasked with the search for Luke after the first Death Star was destroyed because he was best suited for it, wouldn't make sense for him to be taking orders from people in that context

With the 2nd death star, he was there to put dem fellas back on schedule

Takin was the most important person to palpatine next to Vader.

Tarkin at the time would be on Vaders level of importance.

Wait I thought the whole Star Wars mythology happened in one Galaxy? And if it is, did Lucas every mentioned that it's the Milky Way or if Star Wars humans are related to Earth Homo Sapians?

Vader was no one's bitch. When he stopped chocking the Admiral he said "As you wish." or "very well" or something of that sort in the most dismissive tone. They were equals in terms of leadership but Vader had one master.

Dude looks like a ringer from the Nazi SS.

I think in the canon or EU they talk about how he either outranks him in the military or is on equal footing below the Emperor. However, this is only to explain away one of a lot of the inconsistencies in a New Hope and while Lucas pretends that he had all the stories worked out in advance, he was making it up as he went.

They have a new book on him that came out recently, I listened to it while driving and it's kinda mediocre, Vader and him go on a mission, it sounds a lot more interesting than it is. I'm not really digging a lot of this stuff. On another hand I watched all the Cushing Hammer stuff, and really how lucky was SW to have this guy in the cast.

Yeah I'm probably rationalizing, but for some reason I always took that as the Star Wars saga being told in a general sense and not necessarily for the earthling audience.

Edit: I don't even know if that makes sense lol.

Peter Cushing (Tarkin) had a good role in the 1970's Tales from the Crypt movie.

Vader doesnt holds a rank per se in the imperium, he is a sith lord like the emperor.

So its likely that in Ep IV he was charged with assisting Tarkin to destroy the rebels.

In Ep V Vader is no longer in the kill the rebels mission, he is instead charged with finding Luke.

It could be simply that Tarkin was the CO of the Death Star and Vader was ordered to obey while on station.

I think Vader's status is outside of military hierarchy so if the Emperor sends him to do something its extremely important or the Moff dun goofed
