For those of you who train at this academy(if you're located in Montreal its even better :D) , how do you like it ?? How is the training ???? I've been doing no-gi for 6 months now , i want to do Gi as well(people in my own gym say training with the Gi makes your whole game better so ....) and im looking to join another gym so i can do both gi and no-gi. There's a lot of gyms in my city , i need some recommendations.

Thanks
Alex.

Personally I don't think training with the gi makes you better at no gi. They truly are two different animals (same species). Gracie Barra is awesome though from my experience.

I disagree with that. Training both not only increases mat time, but opens you up physically and mentally to more ideas, jiu-jitsu wise. Something might click with the gi that helps you in your no-gi game and vice versa. I think it's always better to train in both, if you can.

Training both doesn't increase mat time necessarily.

It surprises me that some people still harbor these weird thoughts that gi BJJ doesn't increase technical skill in no-gi. Like really, there is not even a shred of evidence to suggest that it doesn't.

well of course training is training, you can train in a dress if you like and it will help your no gi game, however I don't think training in the gi is going to be more helpful (or as helpful) as training no gi, if no gi is primarily what you will be training with or competing with.

i guess a lot of the atmosphere of gracie barra is just who the instructor is, ours is awesome and its such a chill place to be at. amazing training/amazing people

Let me rephrase... "Not only is the POTENTIAL for mat time increased..."

Honestly, I see nothing but benefit from playing both games. In simplest terms, gi forces you to be more aware defensively than no-gi, whereas no-gi requires you to be tighter offensively to be able to finish. The games might be different, but the improvement carries over from one to the other.

TS, who is the instructor at the gym you are interested in? That is a better gauge of how worthwhile the place is rather than blanketing it with "Gracie Barra".

This has been beaten into the ground. I primarily do gi. I have won more no gi competitions (in advanced divisions with leg locks), than in gi. I do not agree with you.

LOL @ the idea of training in a dress. Visual image is visual.

Assuming Professor didn't order me off the mat for showing up that way, I expect I'd spend even more time on the bottom with a dude not even trying to pass my guard.

Gracie Barra is a great association and Bruno Fernandes has a great reputation so I would recommend giving his school a try. And training in both gi and no-gi is better than doing just one.

Roger gracie has said he believes training in the gi makes your nogi escapes way better then with someone who trains only no gi. Personally ive only trained with the gi so i cant have an accurate opinion on the subject, but i can see why Roger says that.

can def see that.

ironically i've never once trained no gi in class yet in tournaments iusually do better in no gi than gi. go figure.
