A few of the guys I train with seem to do this, now I'm pretty sure this is not allowed in Ibjjf rules so I never do it , but Im surprised that a lot of the higher belts at my gym seem to do it to me when we are rolling?

I have never done it as I regularly compete so try and stick by the rules when I role.

I never say anything but it can get frustrating as its quite a hard grip to break sometimes.

How would you guys go about it?

You would surprise to see how many people do not know competition rules.
What about stalling?
Do you get frustrated when someone also stall during a roll?
Like stay on side control or in the guard.

Heh. How you deal with it depends on whether or not you find them attractive

They can't grab inside the pants cuff, but if they are grabbing inside the waist, its legal.

That's my understanding as well. I don't use the grip, but it is not uncommon as part of stacking pass technique.

Stalling is ultra annoying. It's a pity the IBJJF federation rule makers are a bunch of monkey they caught in the jungle and it's not punished hard enough

Since when do IBJJF rules apply to gym rolls? Particularly when you have people who don't compete at all or compete in NAGA, PGL, ADCC, etc. training in the gym. IBJJF is not BJJ.

I grab inside the pants all the time. Fuck those rules about what grips you can and can't make.

That's a good rule though. Not only is it dangerous for the fingers, A strong enough gripper can stall almost indefinitely with that grip. It makes for bad Jiu-Jitsu.

I train for the IBJJF rules as it's the only ruleset that I compete at. (I do only gi).
I don't stall in training as it's ultra lame. If you don't compete there is no reason on at all to stall ever.

I don't see the point in breaking the rules. Let's be real ibjjf is pretty much the rules of the entire sport.
It's like training mma with soccer kicks. Unless you fight in OneFC or are doing self-defense there is no real point.

We do however go for all kinds of footlocks in the gi even though most of us are not brown+

truth is if you are doing it slick enough in smart spots you can get that grip in IBJJF comps, ppl do it all the time. folding the fabric so it doesnt look like that kind of grip is a good way but often in the heat of battle its hard to see that grip is the one that helped with a sweep or its concealed by the position itself.

not that i would do such a thing ;)

Ibjjf tournaments are the most well ran and prestigious for bjj so most guys train under those rules. A ton of orgs that run regional tournaments also copy their ruleset.

Sure there is adcc and ebi etc, but those are not the norm and I really doubt any of these internet contrarians actually compete at them. Don't even mention the garbage that is Naga

Inside the pants grip can tear the pants along the seams pretty easily as well.

I know a few guys that think like you do.
They progress very slowly.

I've seen guys straight up holding the inside of the pants to prevent being scored on with the second hook on a back take in IBJJF without penalty. :(

IBJJF doesn't have a monopoly on the rules of BJJ. Train how your gym, or the gym you're visiting allows.

This is where I am coming from, I find people do it out of frustration to stop a pass or to stop a sweep.

It is very hard to break this type of grip and the roll just stalls, in addition Im pretty sure the IBJJF made this rule for the safety of the competitor as fingers can get broken pretty easy in this grip?

I get that some people font follow the rules when rolling but I try to otherwise why bother with not striking/slamming/ finger pulling?

I think the "no grabbing inside sleeves" rule has been around BJJ for a much longer time than the IBJJF has been. It is also illegal in judo IIRC, and I think the rules is there not so much to prevent stalling but to protect the fingers of the person doing the grabbing.

Also: I cannot for the life of me understand why they don't ban grabbing inside the waist line as well. I´ve seen the Miyao brothers essentially pull their opponents pants down all the way past the buttocks during berimbolo attempts. I´m all for some nice man-buns, but I like to keep my grappling and my gratuitous nudity seperate thank you very much.
