And what I had already thought about myself, was confirmed.
I could give a lesser chit about belt color. They hold up pants.

Pretty sure the only reason the instructor cared, was because he wants someone to teach at times, that had something better than a yellow belt :-D
I had passed the green test like 3-4 years ago. Never turned in the paperwork to obtain the physical belt.

Last night he walked up to me and said, that belt is ugly, here is your new one.

Thought some people might find that amusing. :D

it's good for the dojo. if people have skills, they should have a rank that reflects it if nothing else so that people can know where they stand. And I don't know if you fight in tourneys, but if so and you're still fighting novice divisions then you're sandbagging pretty badly. That said, congrats on your brown. Enjoy teaching (I do).

    Sankyu!

Congrats! I remember when I got mine, it was almost 10 years ago, but for some reason, I remember the moment quite clearly.

Wear it with pride and spread the knowledge!

    Well done!

I hope one day to not completely suck at Judo (at which point maybe someone will give me a new belt).

So ... you went from green to brown? Not sure what rank that belt colour represents (different countries/organisations use slightly different belt colours), but in any case ... well done!

Haven't hit up a tourney since before I tested for my green. So no sand baggin here.

I didn't test for my brown in the traditional sense. Basically since i've gotten back from rib injury #3. I've been beating everyone on the feet, and when it goes to the mat, it's not a matter of if, but when will they tap. The instructor does ask me to demo throws and moves for the class. So i'm guessing that was part of my test.

Which Kyu am I, I haven't a clue what that means so I goggled it. If you mean what level of a brown belt I am, I looked at some Judo tests for black and i'd pass all the throws, hold downs, and newaza. So I dunno??

    My school uses

    White-Orange(kids only)-Yellow-Green-Brown-Brown#2-Black

So I didn't jump any belts, it's just that I didn't really do a traditional test.

Wow, you're a nikyu now? Congratulations. I am competing later this month to work my way up to sankyu. Good on you for your promotion.

There are 3 levels of brown.

    your 1st brown is Sankyu
    2nd is Nikyu
    3rd is Ikyu

Pardon my spelling, but Japanese counting from 1 to 3 is ich, ni, san.

If he just got his brown then he's Sankyu...

Whoops, I guess he would be nikyu if there are only two levels of brown. But then again, the grading phrasing comes directly from the IJF, if you're not using their belt system for adults, then it might not be called anything but brown. Still awesome!

Also, if your instructor feels like you deserve brown, then you should get brown.

If he can see that, on a daily basis, that you know your shit then testing is an unnecessary formality.

Getting your black, on the other hand, is a bigger deal - Especially if you want to be recognized by the IJF, or some other org. Those groups have actual requirements, like performing kata's, etc , that must be done for you to be recognized.

How long did that take? I really have no clue at how hard it is to have a belt in judo, and it seems that a blackbelt isn't incredibly rare.
