GoT fans, let's break it down. What precisely is it that makes this series so great?

First and foremost: I like Fantasy/Medieval and earlier entertainment. Dragons and other mythical beasts and beings, Swords and Sorcery(even though there's very little of that), Pre-gun powder warfare, all of that, it's interesting too me. Don't know why, just is.

Second: the characters, like OP said, are amazing. Arya, Jon, Tyrion, Danaerys, etc. they make you care about them. They often make you laugh, cheer, angry, worry and sometimes bring you close to tears at the thought of or in the event of losing them.

Third, and this is almost as important as the characters: the political intrigue(backstabbing, scheming, etc) and the scandalous nature of the show(incest/false kings, torture, murder etc)

People often bring up the bloody, pornographic, etc nature of the show, but that's not the bulk of what makes the show good. I'd consider that only a small piece of the show and not really the reason I watch it. Although, not going to lie, a pair of tata's everynow and then are nice lol.

war thrones, takes fantasy and puts real feeling people in it

Spartacus himself not a strong character? Oenomaus, Crixus, Batiatus, Lucretia not strong?

The story of a slave's rebellion against the Rome he once served not strong?

No no no no. . . I disagree with you. Spartacus is like a top 5 show of all time, and it's not because of the violence and sex.

Not at all. Spartacus and almost all of the gladiators were static characters who were badasses not because of their personalities or the actor's abilities but because of the kill counts they racked up. Spartacus had several girlfriends throughout the series and not one of them were meaningful or enhanced his character in any way. They were there just to show off their boobs.

Apart from one scene with Spartacus in season 1, none of the main gladiators ever lost. There was no tension ever because you knew the fight scenes were just going to be Spartacus, Gannicus and Crixus kicking ass with little challenge. Til the end of course, which we all knew was coming.

It was entertaining to watch, but to call it a top 5 show is ludicrous.

It's really the first show of its kind. High production values like you're watching a movie every episode, combined with a more adult version of Tolkien's fantasy genre, combined with solid acting\dialogue\ and unpredictable plotting.

It's essentially what can happen when you take pulp seriously.

Probably what every fanboy wishes would happen to his favourite property, before the adaptation gets butchered by hacks in the pursuit of a quick buck.

That's well said.

It reminds me of the situation with video game movies. While there HAVE been a few solid adaptations (I liked Mortal Kombat, Prince of Persia and, to a lesser extent, Resident Evil) most have been pretty shitty and not faithful to the source material.

Sansa is one of the best characters, dood

Great cast, great costumes, great stage building, great locations, great CGI (check the YT vids on them), great props, great source material, great elaborate backstory lore, great dialogues, great action scenes, nudity, sex, taboos, humor, general diversity, mystical beings, awesome weapons, good looking people, great story build up, great one liners, no one's life is secure, great social issues, hierarchies, unusual main character Tyrion, family structures, great fictional customs, high production quality, great additional content, interesting religions, great accents, large fucking cast, characters are all different kinds of ages, colors and shapes, lots of inspiration from non-fictional history, deliberate trolling for emotional outrages from audience.

Well shit, I guess you just broke it down, didn't you?

Yes, exactly. Its almost what would happen if Tarantino directed Lord of The Rings.

You did. Okay, I take back what I said. 2/10 analysis.

TBH, there's just too much to name. Great camera work, awesome elaborate fictional geography, great promotional work (world tours and such), a lot of largely unknown actors, animal brutality, foul play & scheming, a complete arsenal of poisons, magic, lots of traveling, a focking legend, beautifully designed and well thought up family crests, castles, ruins, big ass wall.

Because GoT is an adaptation of the 2nd best fantasy series ever. Can't go wrong with that. Unless some network grow some balls & make a Malazan tv series.

Hot young actresses
Nudity
Gruesome killings
Not afraid to kill off main characters
Replacing main characters with new good main characters

Wow, so this is what the average GoT fan looks for in a show?

Them standards tho...

This thread just reminded me of end of season 4, when they get ambushed in the fighting pits and Danareys flys away on Drogon.

Shit was retarded. Did anyone else think that was ham fisted?
