Never thought I would be flexible enough to pull it off, but this past Saturday pulled one off. The opportunity just popped up right in front of me at open roll this weekend.

He was in my closed guard and I sat up quick looking to go for a kimura on his right arm. He jerked up a little so I went with an overhook instead. He then stood up to stack me, but that extended his arm real nice, so I shifted my hips up getting my thighs up around his armpits and was gonna go far the armbar when he suddenly went back down to his knees. I shifted my hips to the right a little still holding onto the overhook, saw my shin right there behind his head, reached over and grabbed my ankle and popped the shin right over his head onto his throat. Pulled the head down, tap, tap, tap!

I let go and we both kinda looked at each other a little stunned then he said smiling, "Nice set-up!" while I said, "Holy crap, I pulled it off!".

That's awesome, I really want to try one, I wonder if I'm flexible enough to do it? Meh, I'll call my sister in the room later and try it out on her, I'll post back later if I could do it or not :D

You really opened yourself up on this one.

give her a big smootch for me ;)

The first time I went to my current gym I rolled with a purple belt who put me in a gogoplata.

I tapped, got up, said "what the fuck was that?" and spent the next few weeks trying it on everyone who entered my guard. It annoyed the living shit out of my instructor that I wasn't focusing on the basics though, so after he bitched me out I just worked on armbars, triangles, and sweeps for a few months, then he stopped caring when I tried more advanced techniques. He was right, though. I didn't have my basic techniques very polished at the time.

But the gogoplata is pretty sweet. The Omaplata has to be one of my favorite submissions though. It surprises me how many people fail to defend it, and it's always right there after my gogo attempt fails.

Well it isn't something that I look for all the time and it isn't like I went and read Eddie Bravo's book and decided to throw all basics to the wind to try for a gogoplata. It was just really cool how it just came up when my initial combo started out as a kimura, went to armbar, and ended up with a gogoplata.

LOL whenever I want to try a move on some one, it's my sister, but usually my girlfriend who gets put in the hold. Tonight is a gogo, I just want to see if I'm flexible enough.

i like the gogoplata because i can try it and i don't really have to worry about losing position if it fails

congrats, but be careful, this submission takes serious flexibility, and injuries occur very often.

congrats, i'm still looking to land that one myself, had an attempt or two in free rolling but i haven't quite got it yet

i get it every now and then. I can almost put my heel behind my head, so i think i have the flexibility to pull it off safely.

I had a great warm-up before class and when I am warm, I can pretty much kiss my foot...lol. I just never thought I was flexible enough while having someone in my guard to pull my leg over the head.

Now that I can recognize when the opportunity presents itself and I know I can do it, I am incorporating some new stretches into my warm-up just in-case I have the chance to pull it off again.
