Two-time black belt world champion ('96 & '97) Roberto "Gordo" Correa shares his story on how a serious knee injury shaped his jiu jitsu and prompted him to become one of the first to use the half guard as an offensive position. With his contributions in developing half guard sweeps at the time, Gordo is credited as being one of the founders of the half guard position. He discusses how half guard is not a position where you should try to hold your opponent but rather post your body in a way to always destabilize your opponent's base or make them uncomfortable.

Gordo's gym is located in Rio de Janeiro just 3 minutes walk from the Connection Rio house. Huge thanks to Gordo for sharing his story on how his knee injury shaped his jiu jitsu for the better.

I've heard the story but never from him, interesting. I have the exact same injury at the moment and it's been a few months since the surgery. I've been playing a RDLR with my good leg and just keep the left leg out of the action as much as I can. It's interesting that he stuck his left leg in for the half guard when it was injured, I would have been scared of my partner slipping up or falling hard on the leg.
