Republicans, led by President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan, promised to repeal and replace Obamacare, but the difficulties of doing so have some key GOP lawmakers calling more modestly for a mere repair, The Hill reported Wednesday.

"I think it is more accurate to say repair Obamacare because, for example, in the reconciliation procedure that we have in the Senate, we can't repeal all of Obamacare," Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Health Committee Chairman told The Hill. "Obamacare wasn't passed by reconciliation. It can't be repealed by reconciliation. So, we can repair the individual market, which is a good place to start."

Audio leaked from a Republican retreat in Philadelphia last month revealed some worries within the party about the ability to fix the troubled healthcare law, The Washington Post reported.

Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., echoed the sentiment there are parts of Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, which are working and will be difficult to replace, while keeping a promise to not take healthcare away from Americans who benefited from former President Barack Obama's signature legislation.

"I'm trying to be accurate on this that there are some of these provisions in the law that probably will stay, or we may modify them," Walden told The Hill. "But we're going to fix things. We're going to repair things.

"There are things we can build on and repair. There are things we can completely repeal."

If the Republicans think they can fix the disaster known as Obamacare, it will blow up in their faces and give the Democrats the leverage their need to attack them. If they try to fix Obamacare and it fails, Democrats will put the blame solely on them, if they fix it and it works, Democrats will take the credit. It's a no win situation, why are they doing this? Repeal Obamacare and if you want to pass a law on preexisting conditions, do so in Congress but do not try to fix this dumpster fire.

Obviously he will be slated as a liar and conman by the usual suspects on here but if there are serious roadblocks and they can do as good a job by "fixing" Obamacare then why not?

It's all Luntz weasel-wording from focus groups. "Repair" scores much better than "repeal" as the ACA is actually a net favorable now in polling, with repeal without replacement scoring terribly. GOP realize that they cannot find any consensus to replace in their caucus alone and repeal without any replacement is a political death wish. The hope with the "repair" frame is to bring in Democrats who have dug in against any helping for the replacement - knowing the GOP would own it completely for repealing without a ready replacement.

The repair fixes will be the same wholesale changes the GOP still wants, well the non-Freedom Caucus GOP wants. Just trying to replace the needed freedom caucus votes with centrist/moderate Dem votes to be able to pass something. But really this is more about trying to box in Democrats who have said they'd be open to working to make fixes. Won't work though, as Democrats have been open to their fixes for 5+ years and Congresional GOP would stonewall any attempt to fix it. So if GOP wants to repeal and replace it it's completely on them as they have Congressional majorities and the WH.

Obamacare was already a piece of shit disaster. Republicans can't do any worse.

What the Rubes dont realize is Medicare D under Bush was a cash grab by big Pharma.
Obama care was a cash grab by the insurance industry.
The GOP is confused because if you change it, you have to benefit a donor. They are unsure how to play this one off all the while making sure the Rubes buy it.

Consider Paul Ryan's feel-good meeting with Senate Republicans on Tuesday. The House speaker trekked across the Capitol to reassure senators that lawmakers are making more progress toward repealing the health care law than the media are reporting.

But not everyone was buying it. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) left before it was over, having heard enough of a conversation that he says centers around keeping Obamacare's Medicaid expansion intact and creating tax credits that he called a "new entitlement program," though a Republican in the room rebutted the notion that the topic of Medicaid expansion came up in the Tuesday meeting with Ryan.

“I hear things that are unacceptable to me,” Paul said in an interview afterward. “If they don’t seem to care what conservatives think about complete repeal of Obamacare, they’re going to be shocked when they count the votes.”

Rand Paul calling out the establishment GOP

ACA has worked for me as I'm self employed. I have no complaints.

And this isn't going to be repealed. That was just a talking point for the chimps who voted for trump. Probably some leftovers from the loser tea party movement.

Everyone knows how hard this is to simply repeal and replace. The republicans almost never have a plan. They're all talking point. If it isn't beefing up the military or giving tax breaks to billionaires on the back of their beloved middle class, they're useless.

Just a great argument.

"THIS SHIT SUCKS AND ITS HARD SO FUCK IT AND EVERYONE"

Haven't you figured it out yet, one of the main republican strategies is to constantly undermine a program until it no longer runs properly so they can say "we need to remove, get rid of, so and so"

They've been trying to undermine ACA from the beginning. If things don't work them simply them and actuslly make the proper Improvements. I imagine they'll undermine this further instead of simply fixing the things that need to be fixed.

This system is falling apart right in front of your faces and costs are skyrocketing in front of your eyeballs but because Obama pushed this bill will no republican support whatsover, you guys absolutely refuse to admit this shit is a failure. Doesn't matter how many insurers back out or if premiums go up another 150%, doesn't matter how many people you force at gunpoint to buy in to Obamacare so you can say "But 20 Million..."

Repeal Obamacare, don't replace it.
