There's rules and laws in place for the ballot choice. That's why signatures were needed. Not allowing fraudulently acquired signatures is ballot suppression?

I just pointed out that it wasn't voter fraud. Someone still needs to vote for the guy before he can win.

As near as I can tell roughly 700 of those signatures were legit - so I'd call that disenfranchising the voter. At least a lot more than asking for id at the voting both does.

Since what they did in Virginia is apparently not a big deal to conservatives, then maybe its cool if the Dem candidate forges signatures to get a libertarian on the ballot to take those "young fiscal conservative" votes away from the Rep candidate. No problem if that were to happen at all, huh?

This happens all of the time. I've said on this board before, from my personal experience, that getting on the ballot is the first place where corruption and cheating takes place.

There are people who you pay to put names on your petition so that you can run. You show up with a blank petition, tell them how many names you need. Negotiate the price per name ($1 per name is what it cost in my locality). Come back the next day, voila!, you've got enough signatures to be on the ballot.

You could probably challenge 80% of the ballots in big districts. And, here it's true, both sides do it equally.

And I should add that it's institutional. You learn this stuff from the people higher up the food chain in the party. They tell you what you need, introduce you to the right people, check in to see if you need to go that route, etc.

I was personally told once "Just get anyone to sign, doesn't matter if they're Republicans (because you need registered voters from your party to get on the ballot for that party)," followed by "It doesn't matter, they don't have the time/money to challenge all of the ballots."

And it runs this way because the party doesn't give you much money in the beginning to get started. You're expected to do almost everything yourself, part of how you prove your commitment, so unless you have plenty of discretionary cash and empty time then it's natural to start looking for shortcuts. It's not a huge window of time that you can get petition sigs.
