Verily, formerly Google Life Sciences, is releasing millions of infected mosquitoes into the wild to test a population control method that could help fight deadly diseases that the wild mosquitoes carry.

...

The mosquitoes are not genetically modified, however, they have all been infected with "Wolbachia pipientis," a naturally occurring bacteria that is not harmful to humans, but renders the male mosquitoes essentially sterile. When the non-biting Wolbachia-carrying male mates with a wild female, none of their eggs will be able to produce offspring. Over time, the team hopes that the method will cause the mosquitoes population to drop.

Seems like a solid plan by Google. Anyone from Fresno looking forward to this?

I'm worried about the long-term effects on local ecosystems, seeing as mosquitous are a source of food for a lot of animals.

Why the hell does Google have a "life sciences" division? They're getting a little big for their britches. They should focus more on retrieving searches for porn and delivery food and stop trying to turn into skynet.

Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals in the world. They kill over 1 million people a year. They kill more people than murderers kill people. Plus they are annoying as fuck. Im all for scientists finding ways to eradicate those motherfuckers. I just hope these modified bugs dont lead to some kind of crazy super mosquito evolution.

And here a script starts to write it self.

the interlude for the next I am legend.

I've killed a lot of mosquitoes. One reason I couldn't stand central Florida, all the dam mosquitoes.

As for the OP:

First Google came for the Mosquitoes, and I said nothing cause I am not a Mosquitoe
Then Google came for the Asian carp , and still I said nothing cause I am not an Asian carp.
Then Google came for ME , and there was no one left to defend me.

heard about that

"Last October, we announced the Debug Project, an initiative at Verily to reduce the devastating global health impact that disease-carrying mosquitoes inflict on people around the world. Today, I’m happy to announce the launch of Debug Fresno, our first field study in the U.S. to test a potential mosquito control method using sterile insect technique in collaboration with MosquitoMate and Fresno County’s Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District (CMAD)
Debug Fresno will target the invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito, which can transmit diseases like Zika, dengue, and chikungunya. Aedes aegypti first appeared in the central valley of California in 2013, and since then has become pervasive in Fresno County. This study will be the largest U.S. release to-date of sterile male mosquitoes treated with Wolbachia, a naturally occurring bacterium, and will take place over a 20 week period in two neighborhoods each approximately 300 acres in size. When these sterile males mate with wild females the resulting eggs will not hatch. To measure our outcomes, we will compare the adult population density and egg hatching of Aedes aegypti in these targeted areas to two control neighborhoods. Over time, we hope to see a steep decline in the presence of Aedes aegypti in these communities."

Google is basically God now, nice

There is always a cost to messing with nature. I hope the consequences for releasing infected mosquitoes are not too devastating.

Trying to figure out how to turn a taser and crosse into a big bug zapper for the inevitable mosquito apocalypse.

Interesting that so many people seem to be so skeptical of sterile insect techniques. It has been successfully used in the past and can result in significant socioeconomic benefits.
Any specific concerns or just 'doesn't feel right'?
