gonna be a judge at a chili cookoff

so chili is one of my absolutely favorite foods. this weekend, my wife will serve as a celebrity judge at a cookoff and i get to tag along and be a judge as well. pretty much the best thing ever.

however, i am not much of food snob. any tips that i can use to sound like i know what i am talking about? anyone ever been a judge?

Not that I know of, but you could have some fun with it and invent some rituals and customs to testing chili and pretend that's how its done by the experts where you're from. See how many of the pros you can get to do it as well.

Dip one finger in the chili, dab it on the back of your other hand, then watch the chili closely on the back of your hand for 10 seconds, nod approvingly. Touch that spot on your hand with the corner of one tine of your fork, hold that tine up before your eye and squint, sniff the fork, then dab it onto your tongue. Eyes open wide in amazement. Then look at the contestant like only the two of you share a special secret.

Smell the chili deeply as you squish it between your fingers. Stare at the contestants with contempt as you do this. First one to not look away is your vote.

as i said, it is in a small town outside of las vegas. the term "celebrity" is used pretty loosely

Best advice you'll get all day, take Tums with you and maybe take a Prilosec before it starts. Chili all day with varying meats and spices is a perfect recipe for indigestion.
