Hey guys. I am going to be going to marcelo's gym up in new york for 2 weeks. I was wondering if anyone here trained there so I could ask them some questions like does he teach every class? How far is his school from Brooklyn? etc etc. Never been to NY and don't know what to expect or my means of transportation. Just got a lot of questions to anyone that trains there.

P.S
Would it be possible to get a interview from him? Would it be possible to roll with him as well?

Brooklyn is a big place. Where in Brooklyn are you staying?

I'm in Bensonhurst, and it takes about 45 minutes to get to his gym from where I am.

It's been a few months since I last visited.

Unless things have changed, from Monday- Friday, he teaches the 12:30-1:30pm class, and the 7:00-8:30pm class.

In addition to teaching, he also trains during the evening class (maybe the noon too- I didnt get to train then).

Keep in mind, I believe the academy is closed during Christmas week.

Im staying at some street Irving Avenue? Not sure where exactly that is in Brooklyn. I am hoping to go twice a day for two weeks. Just want to know how the classes are like and the format. It'd be nice to site see around marcelo's gym because isn't his gym located in Manhattan?

Thanks for letting me know that and the previous poster. It would have sucked it I planned to train on the 26-30 for my two weeks. Would the most efficient way to take the subway? I have never ridden one and I plan on using that method instead of taking a cab.

If you get to roll with him, make sure that you video tape it

Thanks for the info. I was wondering what the holiday schedule would be like. I was going to go mid dec but I'm thinking early Jan is better. See you guys then.

6th Floor, elevator doors open and then boom... you are there :-) Mat is right in front of you!

Nice, are you going up there just to train with him or are you visiting friends/family as well? I've been planning 2 week trip up there to train sometime in 2012. Why are you staying in Brooklyn? I was thinking of staying at a hostel in Manhattan while I was there since it would be waay cheaper than a hotel

I am planning to make a documentary or a video blog of me training there. Coming from a little school in the south to Marcelo Garcia's is a huge upgrade and experience for me. I am gonna be sure to take full advantage and train multiple times a day with him. I was hoping to get a video interview but I don't know what I would ask so that'd be up to you guys to help me :icon_lol:

I have to stay in Brooklyn because of my friend. He has a room there that I could sleep and stay at but hes not gonna be there because hes visiting family until after January. I would def try to stay in Manhattan. 20 min subway rides is a no no considering I never rode one in my life.

Just a head's up- the academy might also be closed a few days in Jan- around Martin Luther King day (Jan. 16th).

Going in the subway seems a bit daunting, especially if you first look at the subway map...but it is relatively easy to figure out.

It is definitely worth taking the subway, and commuting to the academy, if it means you can live rent free while on your trip. The most expensive part of any NYC trip is usually the hotel stay.

You can study the subway map here:

mta.info | Subway Map

The closest subway stops to Marcelo's are:

1) The Orange line (N/R) to 34th St- Herald Sq (5 mins walk), or 42nd St Times Square (10 mins walk)

2) Green Line (4,5,6) to 33rd St. (10 mins walk)

You can take the N,Q,R,M,F,B,D to herald sq which is a few minutes away. You can also take the ACE123 which drops you at penn station or time sq and is a 10 minute walk.
