Hey when you all are looking for a gi what do you look for? Do you look for a gi that is slightly tapered or do you go for something a little baggy? Do you look for the sleeve cuffs to have a good amount of room or as little room as possible? Whats you personal preference on what you look for?

If you don't have any gis, I suggest going to the nearest store that has them and see which one fits you. That's what it did when I got my first gi. Now I buy them online as I know which ones I like.

Everyone is different;

You could just go naked to class and make 'em tap before engaging.

Personally, I like a tapered cut with a longer skirt and tapered sleeves with a little room in the shoulders. The skirt I like longer because I hate it when my gi won't stay in my belt. Sleeves I like tapered because it keeps your opponent from getting pistol grips and I don't use the ezekiel choke so there isnt a reason for me to have wider sleeves.

Incidently, the reason for baggy gis is generally to encourage gripping, takered gis is to restrict it. Thats why judo gis are so roomy and generally jujitsu gis are more tapered with shorter skirts.

You want tapered sleeves. As AgentFish pointed out, it's harder for your opponent to grip them. Generally want your gi to be loose enough to move without restricting you, but without too much extra fabric.

Ok thanks. Right now i have 4 gis
1) Gladiator (hate it)
2) Fuji
3) Sirius(feels like an over coat a little big on me)
4) HCK Comp Lite new version

The Gladiators going in the trash
I am either going to get a Koral classic(newer version), Gameness air,Fushida Mantis, or an Atama single or gold weave. I am doing 3 classes a week so i want good rotation. In general do any of you know if these have the qualities you all talked about?

It all depends on your build and how you personally fit into any gi. Most specifically-designed BJJ gis have tapered sleeves. Roomy shoulders and skirt length depend on your build in relationship to the cut, in most cases.

I've owned two Atama gis, a double weave and a Mundial 9 (which I still wear), and they are awesome gis. Simple, no frills, but absolutely solid. I have no complaints with shoulder fit in either one.

I am 5'8" and weight about 185. Right now the Atamas and Korals are in the lead. heck i may eventually get both

Where are you and how much are you comfortable spending? Most people recommend fuji and the like because they are okay gi but their price is really cheap which makes up for it. I'd say if you're looking at Atamas and Korals you have quite a big budget.

I'm in an area where there is multiple stores that carry gis so I can try them on. I'd recommend looking on google and go to local stores. Just find the gi that fits best keeping in mind shrinkage. There are people there that can answer all your questions so it goes really smooth. If you don't have any in your area, tournaments usually has vendors there selling gis if there is one coming up. Your school should have some gis for sale too.

First gi is where you will find what out what you like and dislike. Like fit and what not. So get a gi soon and learn with it, shrinking is the biggest obstacle. That is also why people recommend cheaper gis for the first one. If you're in the bjj game for the long haul then you'll get countless gis. Try to keep in mind that the first gi is where a lot of mistakes will be made so try to find one that fits good first and foremost.
