..either buying it yourself or hand-me down.I got my first car in high school. My first was a toyota hatchback. It wasn't fancy but it got me from a to z.
My great aunt gave me her 1993 baby blue Ford Tempo after I graduated high school. I felt like a king.
Bought a 2010 Honda Accord with fully loaded black leather seats interior. brand new and loving it
late night fast food runs. Not having to bum rides or bug my folks for a ride.Felt liberating.
2003 VR6 was my first.
Very similar to this:

I still miss that car. Like a go-cart on rails. I sold it for a girl. Biggest mistake/life lesson I ever learned.
Currently using a hand me down, but upgrading in the near future. Didn't want to buy something that would hurt my rep, so i used the hand me down till I could afford something shiny
Bought my first car when I was 18, an 86 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme. Great cruising car. Worst car I have ever driven in the winter.
Bought a 99 Volkswagon golf when I was 19, its our 4 year anniversary this april!
1992 Dodge Shadow got as a graduation present. The funny part is I didn't get my license till I was 22 (medical reasons)
I got my first car at the age of 17 as a birthday present:

1991 Isuzu Impulse RS AWD Intercooled Turbo except mine was blue not grey

87 celebrity... payed $800 for and another $1000 to get it road worthy.
Wrapped it around a lamp post after 2 years... not a pleasant experience.
1972 Chevy Nova
86 subaru station wagon.

got it by shoveling manure for its previous owner for a few months.
bought it off my uncle when I was 18. A 1983 Cadillac Coupe De Ville for $400.
1984 Jeep Cherokee Chief. I ran it out of oil and locked it up.
