Anyone have any good stories about getting slammed in training by the new guys?
We had only two people show up for my MMA class the other week, so we decided to train a little with the karate people next door(the class is based out of a karate dojo). They train a little grappling, so we were basically just rolling for a round with each of them teaching them stuff and switching every round.
Anyway, I end up getting paired up with this ex wrestler dude that is freakishly strong. My instructor told me to push him and see what he could do, so I'm like ok. He ends up taking me down pretty hard, I get to guard relatively easily and grab and armbar from the bottom.
Now I'm not used to rolling with people with no BJJ experience, so I did what I normally do and I locked the submission with only lightly cranking it. Usually my training partners recognize when they're in a position they can't escape from and tap before I really have to crank. This kid brings his arm up ala Fedor v. HMC and literally lifts me straight above his head while I'm holding on to his arm. I almost shit my pants lol I was not expecting it at all.
I ended up letting go of his arm and ending up RNCing him, but holy shit. If I hadn't let go of his arm I probably would have had a major concussion, I mean he literally had his arm like straight above his head with me hanging on, it was ridiculous.

Teammate got slammed at Grapplers Quest and has had shoulder problems for around 2 years.... other guy got dqed

Sorry to hear that, i just posted like a couple of nights ago about grappling with a judo orange belt. I know how you feel.

shit scares me, its so easy for a new dude to change ur life because hes bein a hard ass

i bit my tongue with my mouth guard i was bleeding, alot, but it was ok at the end, thats about it

what a dick, shoulda broke his arm

Nah, he didn't know better.
Another time I was rolling with a guy that DID know better and he tried to slam out of my triangle. Luckily if someone tries to slam out of your triangle it's pretty easy to defend and make it tighter. He tried it twice, both times I scooted to an angle so he couldn't lift me. He tapped and I considered putting him to sleep, but I'm a nice guy so I just told him not to try and slam me.

A few days before a tournament I was asked to roll with an MMA fighter that came in for open mat from another gym. I told him I needed to go light because I had an injured right arm 9at the time it was a hairline fracture, but I didn't know it yet).

Anyway he agrees we should go slow, and we start. At first he's keeping his word going real slow, and I'm throwing super slow submission attempts and he's shrugging them off, but then he puts himself in a real deep triangle, so he stands up and I was expecting him to try to shake me off, but instead he rampages me to the ground and starts going balls to the wall. and I hook his leg and really start laying into the choke.

Part of me wanted to choke him out right there, but I knew he'd tap first and I don't have it in me to hold a submission after the tap, so I let go. Swept him and put him in the quickest nastiest kimura I could do. Not to pop his shoulder out, but he definitely felt that one.

The worst is when they slam you repeatedly few feet above the ground ... I hate rolling with new guys ... You have to hurt them for them to understand it wasn't really nice :(

Would he have even remembered? The last time I went out (bow and arrow to a former D-I purple belt) I thought that I had tapped, but wasn't sure, and certainly wasn't going to accuse the guy of holding the choke.

alright.

im 5'11'' and 160 pounds so im not that big.
this new guy (its always a new guy isnt it?) comes in and he looks in his mid twenties, and probabbly weighs 190-200 pounds.

We end up partners and as we begin the roll he tells me he wrestled for 5 years.

i was like "aw fuck hes gunna beast his way out of everything and bash me around"

we begin the roll and i end up taking his back and looking for the choke.

as soon as i get the choke the guy rolls on his knees, stands up and jumps backwards.

it doesnt dislodge the choke and i held it for a second or five after he tapped.

(i actually only held it for a second longer than is usual)

did you do anything to piss him off before hand?

lol

Naga, dude slammed some guy OFF THE MAT. I'm pretty sure he got DQ'd right there, couldn't tell in the commotion. All I know is the slam-ee is just chill as fuck and extends a handshake to the slammer, as if to say, "I know it wasn't intentional? Don't care? Good slam?" Who knows.

The slammer SHOVES him as he tries to handshake.

Needless to say, whether at the point of the slam or after, he was DQ'd.

I am one of those lankier body type grapplers who seem to have a neck that is difficult to choke, and my choke defense confidence has led to a few instances where my judgment was incorrect.

As far as that particular guy having it out for me--potentially, as we are both highly competitive and I had threatened him with a deep anaconda prior. Maybe I was being taught a lesson on the food chain, but I doubt it, as he is in my top 3 favorite training partners.

FWIW, nobody I've put out has ever accused me of holding a choke after a tap, and you have to think that at least one of them had tapped and I'd missed it, so I don't think people have accurate knowledge of those final seconds before they go out, just an approximation based on context.

Also, as far as slams go, I've been slammed maybe a half-dozen times, and I am to blame for all of them for failing to execute proper control. 5 times on the mats, all by pro or am fighters, and once on carpet in an apt. No injuries, luckily.

I was powerbombed a long time ago in a wrestling match. I didn't realize it at the time, but the slam created space between my vertebrae. I woke up one morning about 6 months later and couldn't move my neck or bend over. I went to the emergency room and they ran some x-rays. It seems that the slam and subsequent undiagnosed condition gave me arthritic spots in my spine. Now I have to crack my neck everyday and I get stingers from doing it. If I don't crack my neck for a few days I can't move it until I crack it a bunch of times, like I'm breaking something up in there. Needless to say, I stay away from getting slammed now. -ken

Fucking hell. Thats rough.

Are powerbombs legal in greco/folk wrestling or whatever it was you did?
Or did you do WWE style wrestling? That'd be pretty cool imo.

Not that it's good to get slammed, but it's a good experience in that now you realize it's there.
