getting out of the side control

I've just had a private with Mario Reis (black belt and ex-world champ) involving side-control! I just got taught 5 different ways to hold someone in side control and 5 submissions from each hold! So a lot depends on how you're getting held. You can't use the same escape for all of them.
 
It's a total bitch if the guy knows what he is doing -- especially if he shifts to N/S if you start to get a knee in.

A key thing that I have been having good luck with is going to your knees, rather than the straight "get your knee in" approach. Try for the knee, but if you fail, you usually have a good shot at spinning the other way into turtle. And turtle is pretty easy to get out back to guard or better.
