We were rolling last night at the end of class and I got locked into a half guard I just couldn't get out of. I'm wary of youtube hunting for technique because I'm still new to BJJ and don't want to find a bad video - any good methods you know of for getting out of someone's half guard?

Scenario - I'm on top in opponents guard and I'm trying to pass for side control - I get half way through and he's locked onto one of my legs...we spent minutes fighting eachother from there...

I wanted out badly, but didn't really know what to do.

Underhook.

Shoulder pressure.

Flatten them.

If they are not flat, on the mat, it is extremely difficult to pass HG (and really, most guards).

If your going for a left side pass:
- fight for the underhook on the right side,
- place your head on the left side (beside their head),
- place your left hand on their knee,
- turn your hips in the direction you wanna pass, &
- finish the pass

If you are still stuch and have not made it to side control yet:
- kick your traped leg free (your right leg), with your left foot by pushing their leg (the top leg locking down half-guard) to free your foot to complete the transition.

Sorry if the points above don't clearly describe the progression.

Cheers.
