I have a friend who received a purple belt from an instructor...but not too many months after he had to leave the gym because of unforeseen circumstances both in school and work.

So, because he was no longer coming out to the gym the instructor informed him via text-message that he was demoted back down to blue-belt.

I have a couple of problems with this.

1) See thread title.

2) Demoting someone via text-message is cowardly and tactless. The instructor should have told him in person or could have at least called him.

Thoughts?

Did he forget to pay him for the certificate?

If you are awarded your belt then not attending class is no reason for demotion. The instructor sounds like a clown.

What school, what instructor? And don't give me any of this "oh i don't want to name names or badmouth anyone" B.S.

I'm not sure there is that system in play for purple belts.

BTW, my friend is pretty legit in his BJJ. He won Pan-Ams as white belt in the 121 lbs. division. He later eventually got re-promoted under Nino Schembri to purple belt.

Personally, I would keep wearing the belt out of spite, even if I really wasn't up to that belts standards.

Anyhow. We need names.

He got his blue belt his blue belt from a former Black Belt world champion.

Later, my friend trained under another gentleman. If I'm re-calling the story correctly my friend trained with him for quite some time (at least a year) and got promoted to purple. Then later he was de-moted back down to blue after he left the gym. He honored the de-motion and was later re-promoted by Nino Schembri.

That is a BS move. I believe in team loyalty, and that is an example of an instructor not being loyal to his student. If I were in that position I couldn't go back to that school, but I don't think I'd respect the rank enough to keep wearing it.

My friend is a good guy...he's very respectful, humble, and capable in his BJJ. As I stated earlier, he won Pan Ams as a white belt. Apparently there was some sort of implicit agreement that if he got promoted he would stay at the gym for a while? He told me this a while back...so I don't want to get the facts mixed up. But there certainly wasn't any moral issue or anything like that going on.

well, unfortunetly some instructors treat a belt promotion as their own personal tramp stamp.

Just wondering, do the instructors give you certificate once you get promoted?

why would you want to affiliate yourself with a clown instructor like that anyways? i say put the blue back on.

I suppose that's the downside of not having a large governing body (or two) for your Art. Your promotion gets recognized by the Org, the coach can't just strip you of it for no reason.

i say wear the blue and go to a school that doesnt have a dick instructor... And wait for a good guy to give you the purps cos this guy is obviously a tard and probably cant grade well either. That being said also punch him in the face for being a wanker

ah thats because unless he thought the guy was a blue when infact a whitebelt, making the promotion unjust is retarded and probably motivated by ego or money

I know he had his purple for a while before moving and then getting de-moted via text-message. Like I said, later he was re-promoted by another Black Belt.
