On another forum somebody called out Crag Smith (one of the top Highland Games throwers in the world - Craig Smith) with the "you're genetically gifted, period." argument. I thought his reply was pretty good. He said "I might agree to a point, but my counterpoint would be how many workouts have you missed in the last 20 YEARS? Cause for me, it isn't many."

I believe the book, "The Talent Code" talks about it. Haven't read it, but have heard a fair bit about it from my son's soccer coach. One thing he advocates is making sure you are not the first in birth order. He recommends having at least two older siblings before being born.

From what I've seen , most serious power lifters do a lot of adjustments to their genetics. How many top guys compete where there is testing?

I personally found a crescent wrench and a blow torch to be optimal for this process.

I would have thought you'd see better results with gamma radiation exposures and bites from radioactive spiders?

Well, I talked to some high level pro power lifters in SoCal about training and one of the first things they asked was what kind of "supplements" I take

You still don't get it. Re-read what I bolded from your post and think about it for a few minutes.

I don't know why people think this way; I guess that, like genetics, it's another way to justify your own mediocrity through your ostensible limitations (I'm not pointing that comment at you, rms--don't take offense). For example, I'll probably have a 1400-lb. total at 148 lbs. while drug free before the age of 30, and I'm not a superstar talent. It's possible to reach a high level without having to take anything.

While you can always hope that you have an older, evil twin somewhere. Or a Igor like older brother hidden away in an attic somewhere. Or that you had an older sister, but your parents had fallen in with an bizarre cult and sacrificed her to a lovecraftian demon.

Genetics play a role in every sport. Not many whites can hang with blacks in basketball and not many blacks can swim with whites. Not racists just facts.

Just take some horse meat, you'll never have to worry about genetics again.

Except you completely omitted the socioeconomic and cultural forces at work in black communities vice white communities or any other ethnicity.

Or do you think Brazilians win all the major grappling tournaments because they are genetically better?

Not to mention the gross and wrong oversimplification of how human genetics vary by ethnicity or geographical origin of ancestors. For example, the geographical distribution of blood type alleles:

    This seems topical.

Source: Why are Jamaicans so good at sprinting? - Slate Magazine

Exactly 99% of the top sprinting times are held by West Africans, or those of West African descent. Who make up about 3-4% of the world's population. But of course, there is no genetic component to their success. No one but West Africans has ever really tried to run really fast, after all.

Why is it so awkward to admit that, on the whole, different body types, which may be more common in certain racial groups, might be more advantageous in certain sports?

I believe it has to do with fast and slow twitch fibers for the most part.
