Joe Rogan speaks with former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party candidate for President. There's legitimate dislike for both "real" choices and it's unfortunate that many conform to the viewpoint that going third party is throwing your vote away.

-Generally considers himself a social liberal and fiscal conservative.
-Drug war is causing more problems than it solves.
-Gary says throwing your vote away is by voting for someone you don't believe in.
-Believes he represents majority of Americans beliefs.
-Not being allowed into the debates is big problem.
-Says inflation is an insidious tax so expanded taxing/spending by government needs checked.
-If you can work you should work so incentive working (see 20 mins in for explanation).
-Expresses views on the ACA/health insurace beginning at 24:30.
-Would like welfare and medicare to be administered on the state level (keeping federal funds).
-Insurance should be for catastrophic issues and overall prices would plummet with advertised pricing.
-Weed is a good example of the value of 50 states getting to find out what works and doesn't.
-Says immigration is a boogeyman and a wall is crazy.
-Too many people in prisons due to drug war
-Need less prisons, but privatizing was good because it was 2/3 the cost for same services.
-Feds shouldn't dictate education to the states (via funding requirements or otherwise).
-Says it costs money to get money from feds such that it's a net negative.
-Would have vetoed NC bathroom bill and government shouldn't be involved here.
-Would sign laws that he feels would make things better for people.
-Gary has no problem with men and women showering together as seen in Europe.
-Wonders if early alcohol experience and delayed driving would work better.
-Thinks silver bullet to system is term limits for elected officials.
-Felt himself more emboldened on big issues when in final term.
-90% of drug problem is prohibition related, not usage.
-Weed is the kinder, gentler drug and could replace medicinal/recreational use of more dangerous drugs.
-Jokes that every 16 years you install a benevolent dictator for two years to right the wrongs.
-We're a Constitutional Republic with laws and unfettered democracy poses problems.
-He favors a cap on government spending as it would make economic sense.
-More liberty can be achieved by less government in some areas, not key ones.
-Cuts via attrition, not firings.
-Considers himself frugal.
-Would abolish Homeland Security or merge with FBI.
-Success in government is wrongly viewed as growing the government mandate.
-Would set up an "open door after 4:00" policy for government fraud, abuse and waste claims.
-Would have done something about Flint immediately upon hearing of it.
-Gary would cut down Presidential travel expenses by skipping the extravagance.
-Jokes he'd take F-16's to get to and fro.
-Only chance to win is to get into the debates. (About 1 1/2 hours in at this point)
-Require polls to include candidates with mathematical chances to achieve the electoral votes.
-Says it's impossible to disagree with Obama's rhetoric but actions have been short.
-Supports Snowden as a whistle-blower.
-Would fix any problems with NSA, not try to prosecute anyone.
-America didn't fight wars to spy on every citizen.
-Claims the President could repeal the NSA but would instead turn the lens outward as should be.
-Obama has disappointed on surveillance based on rhetoric.
-Critical of drone strikes.
-If attacked we would attack. Also should have impenetrable defense.
-Congress has abdicated war responsibilities and should reclaim them.
-North Korea is biggest threat internationally and China needs to step up and sort it out.
-Favors less world policing and placing Americans in harm's way.
-Thinks intervening in other countries doesn't provide net benefit.
-Iran funds terrorism.
-Chief tenant of his foreign policy is don't fund countries that sponsor terrorism.
-Doesn't have the intel to state more firm foreign policy strategy or tactics.
-Changing stances means supplying answers and taking the criticism.
-Believes you good government doesn't need co-opted.
-Believes in telling the truth and admitting mistakes, then fixing things.
-Feels like guiding principles are better than experience being co-opted.
-Wants to eliminate income and corporate tax. Replace with the Fair Tax.
-Fair Tax would eliminate most of the lobbyists since they're there for tax breaks.
-Explains Fair Tax in greater detail. Gets same stuff done in simpler fashion.
-Reiterates he'll sign good laws that make things better regardless if it's his hope or plan.
-0% corporate tax rates would bring jobs to America.
-Claims to have originated the joke about politicians wearing sponsors on clothes like NASCAR.
-Limiting campaign contributions is misguided. Just make it transparent.
-Rich people can back good government without expecting favors.
-Self-funded his first primary run with 500k just to try to make things better.
-Not cheap but spends his money wisely. Government skeptic. Tolerant socially. Entrepreneur. Values athletics cuz learned to deal with failure and move forward with his best. Honest. Would love the chance to whip the other challengers in the debates.

Character should count for a lot here and it reinforces the status quo when lack of past votes is used as a reason a candidate or party can't win today. He's got my vote. Who's with me?

Is it official that he's the nominee for the libertarian party? I'd vote for whoever it is but ideally not Peterson. Hopefully it's Johnson as he's more pragmatic and experienced than Mcafee

If you vote for Gary Johnson, your vote will be counted. But it won't be your vote that counts.....

I'm too much of an authoritarian to be voting liberartian. I know because @JackVSavage told me so.

I read that one of the Koch brothers is backing him too

I know Gary bout to get a bunch of hate one way or another, it just happens. However, he was a great governor for my state, best we've had(New Mexico). Now he is not liked by the establishment on both sides which is a positive in my book because he doesn't go full sellout like almost every other politician.

Johnson supporters are all racists according to a certain poster on here.

I suppose refusing state edicts is somehow being "authoritarian" against the poor, innocent Stateists.

Everyone to the right of Elizabeth Warren is a right-winger or racist to Sherdogs favorite time waster.

Also don't forget anyone and everyone who has ever disagreed with him is DISHONEST!

I made a drinking game out of his accusations of racism, dishonesty, or simple name calling. It's only funny because those three accusations will come up to almost anyone who disagrees with him.

Whoa you must've been put under the table quick.

I voted for him in 2012 and I'll for him again this year.

The libertarian party broke its record for getting one percent of the popular vote in 2012. I'm sure it's going to be much high this go around.

Will the next round of debates feature this Libertarian? I want to see some media coverage of him.

What about Ralph Nader? Is that guy still running?

I watched this the other day. I found myself agreeing with so much of what he has to say. A lot of it was simple and to the point and quite reasonable. He spoke of the ISideWith site and he was my top pick when all the Libertarian candidates started being added when I took the test a while back. I must check it again to see where I stand with him and everyone left now.

With the dissension on the right with Trump's nomination (and even on the left with Bernie) I feel that this election could be one that might actually shake things up in the US.

I haven't been here that long, but what's that dude's deal? Contrarian for the sake of it? I get the impression that he thinks that most folk here loathe poor people.

it's unfortunate that many conform to the viewpoint that going third party is throwing your vote away.

It's even more unfortunate that with the first past the post system you have they're pretty much right.

I like Gary Johnson. He did a good as Governor in my state. Voted for him in '12 and probably will again if he's on the ticket.

There are a few of his stances I disagree with, but I find myself agreeing more with him than most politicians.
