I know the city didn’t turn bad until the late 60’s early 70’s, but wouldn’t you think the people of the city would want someone fiscally responsible?

    Like Republicans or Libertarians?

The city was running great under Republican control in the early 1900’s.

Ya’ll think a Republican mayor alone would be able to revitalize the city?

Well Gary is getting a new mayor in December. Some democrat Jerome Prince. I bet he’ll suck though.

Having a party in change for too long leads to corruption.
MoCo is heavily Democrat and the old executive was border lone corrupt. Guy gifted his friends some serious presents. Like selling govt buildings to them and guaranteeing them good rents.

It's always cute seeing man-children try to talk about the republican party prior to the 1960s.
    https://www.quora.com/When-did-the-ideologies-of-the-Democratic-and-Republican-parties-flip

Or in the case of midwestern cities, a complete loss of major industry destroying their economies in a manner that literally nothing could stop at the local policy level.

But hey, cool thread bro, we get it: you're super smart and republicans are awesome and democrats are suck. Galaxy brain stuff you've delivered to the War Room.

Many people blame Gary’s decline on Mayor Hatcher. The first black mayor of Gary. Guy was big on black power. He caused a lot of White business owners to flee.

Alright, Democrats and Republicans were supposedly flip-flopped? Well Gary wasn’t a city until 1906. The party switch happened around 1912.

If you look at the link I provided, Gary started off ran by present day Conservatives and the city boomed nicely.

It was social and cultural change, not the "fiscal responsibility" of local government. Why do we attribute that much power to government? Both sides talking heads do it. The government doesn't (it wants to, and does a little) decide how businesses are run, how people keep up their homes, how fathers stay and care about their children, how parents talk around their children, how much people decide to steal, etc... gimme a break.

Let it fail. It's the only way some people learn.

California is going down the tubes. Only then will they quit electing Democrats.

The decline of Gary is directly linked to the decline of the steel industry not because the Democrats were in charge for so long. But go ahead anyway.

Yea, you’re right there was a big cultural change. White people moved out when Mayor Hatcher took office and the Blacks moved in. Then everything declined severely.

Lots of black people don’t have college degrees. Gary could use lots of warehouses and Union jobs. That’d help out.

Will County Illinois is exploding with warehouses and general labor work. (50 minutes from Gary.)

The cities are offering tax exemptions to businesses, and the businesses are jumping on it.

Why can’t Gary do this? Dumbass politicians most likely..

No I dont think any mayor can revitalize these rust belt cities because the things that killed them are federal policies . Last I check mayors dont have the power to cancel things life nafta and create trade policies .

Yeah, back in the day when small towns had lots of Democrat mayors, small town America was booming. Now virtually every small town in the country is run by Republicans and they're all dying while their best and brightest citizens move to metropolitan areas.

Must mean that Republicans are awful. I bet if those small towns elected Democrats, things would turn right around: mom and pap shops would replace the gas station convenience stores, little locally owned sandwich shops would replace fast food restaurants, and the old coal mine and smelting plants would open back up.

Or not. Because local governance has absolutely nothing to do with the decline of small town America, just like the decline of the post-industrial Midwestern cities.

Well people have always told me Republicans are generally better with money than Democrats. Lots of people. Congress was mostly Democratic when George W Bush was president, (I’ve been told.) possibly a reason for the 2008 recession.

Alright, NAFTA was tough for businesses. I’ll agree with you on that.

However, warehouses are increasing year after year in America.. Why can’t Gary get some or a lot of them?

Gary just got an Amazon warehouse. It’s not a big one though. Still a step in the right direction though.
