What is the best trio in the FW division ? I don't know if we can count Edgar in the FW landscape but there was also Mendes

I think we have one of the best top 3 right now at FW than we ever had in all UFC divisions. And i think this top 3 is even better than the Aldo Conor Edgar/Mendes era

What do you think ? Volk is a monster, Holloway will be remembered as one of the all time greats, and Ortega gave them both a great fight and still has time to improve

What i would do to see present day Volk vs. 2014 Aldo.... Edgar was also a beast during this time and a fight with him and Volk would be crazy.

At the end of the day, it's hard to say. Im not sure if Conor would be able to KO Ortega. Max would def mess up Mendes tho

I really like this current era but it’s been so stale with inactivity. Hopefully the division is back running again soon.

Aldo is still considered #1 FW goat because of the title defences he had.
VOlkanovski is now #2. Volkanvski might not need as many title defences to dethrone Aldo from the #1 position though.

Ortega doesn't deserve a mention with them to be honest. he is tough and a great fighter but has been outclassed in both fights.

I don't know who the third is to be honest, but Ortega has lost to both and only has a win over KZ between them.

The head to head win is hard to look past. In a 5 rounder I think Volk wins as Aldo always won 3 and then coasted. Volk would edge an early round and then win the last two if he didn't get a finish late.

Volk is so close to surpassing him, but Aldo is ahead of Max even with the losses.

Top 5 fw from 2014 was a bit more stacked and they actually fought a bit more regularly, but it's close. FW as a whole is more stacked now, but too many of the top 5 guys only fight like once every other year, which is preventing it from appearing as stacked as it could.

Not sure about Ortega but yeah, Max and Volk are more evolved fighters than those from the past generation.
Sport evolves at a high pace and especially in lighest weighclasses in recent years when finally there is money to be made in "manlet" divisions in MMA

It’s a shame that the opposite has happened though.

    Volk beat Aldo
    Max beat Aldo and Frankie
    Ortega beat Frankie

    You must be upset

Just comparing the stats, makes the picture very clear. Volk, Max and Ortega are way better athletes than Aldo, Conor and Frankie. The pace they fight on would crush those from previous generation. We’ve seen it in those few fights that happened between them

It’s common knowledge everywhere, except on Sherdog

It is but especially in lighest divisions. In upper weight classes too but to a lesser extent.
On the one hand, the heavier talent pools are thinner and on the other hand, back in 2005 there were already big sums of money to be made in MMA at HW or LHW while at FW there wasn't proffesional circuit in the first place; at least outside of JApan in which was basically a regional league.

GOAT talks are always futile and I won't argue Aldo is the FW GOAT based on his accomplishments but denying current champions and contenders are more complete than in the previous generation is blind nostalgy, and there is lot of it in these boards

By that logic the best player in the NBA that year is better than Jordan just because it happened more recently.

The Aldo Conor Edgar/Mendes era was obviously the superior era.

After the partnership with USADA, guys were not able to cut as much weight, and train as much, so I doubt we will ever again see the technical or physical level we saw in 2015.

I dont know enough about basketball but I do know what Im watching when I watch MMA and I can tell you that for the most part the skill and conditioning level has increased, especially in lighest weightclasses.

Anyways you are comparing a team sport with no weight-classes and around 80 years of competition history with an individual sport with not even 30. Apples and cadillacs so dont tell me about "logics" lol

The Mendes and Aldo that fought in the Mendes v Aldo 2 were monsters and the arguably pinnacle of FW.

I don't think Ortega would stand a chance against either in the stand-up, and wouldn't be able to snag a submission.
Volk beat a lesser version if Mendes and Aldo, but is probably on par with prime them?
Holloway is a bad matchup for all Aldos, and I don't know how he'd handle Mendes's wrestling.

Volk vs 145 Prime , Eye of the Tiger McGregor would be fun... But 2021 FW is the best it's ever been.

Fuck, someone actually took the time to check the fightrecord between them.

In their prime I guess? My thought was that if Edgar was in the centre, Conor and Aldo could cover the flanks with legkicks and haymakers, and I think Edgar is the best grappler among those 6(prime Edgar) so he would shut down the center attack and let the other 2 swing.

FW GOAT conversation should only be Aldo, Max and Volk.

Mendes vs Aldo 2 took both fighters to exhaustion at around 150 total significant strikes combined, which is much less than what Volk or Max tend to throw solo over 5 rounds. When you compare that fight to either of the Max vs Volk matches, you can also see clear inferiority in striking technique--less of an ability to stance switch effectively, less feinting, less complex combos, etc.

The simple truth is that Aldo wasn't too much past his prime when he fought Max or Volk, if at all. They're just better, and would beat any time travelling version of Aldo from any year. The "this isn't peak Aldo" narrative not only has no basis, but discredits what Max and Volk did just to help Aldo save face.
