I have made a sort of flowchart for the 93 guard, incorporating all the moves shown in the 93 guard volume of Robson Moura's new Fusion 2:

Great stuff!!!!
I never knew the half guard I use with a 'knee up' was called 93 guard, and that there was a bunch of moves on top of what I knew for it :D at least until I saw fusion 2 lol. Great guard and I find I alternate between this and z guard!!!

What's the difference between the z guard and the 93 guard and the half guard? I'm confused?

BTW, great resource Shane! I would love it if I knew what it was! ;-) P.S. Chess?

93 guard and Z guard are similar, except 93 guard is an open half-guard. Z guard, you cross the feet and have the knee on the opponents hip, normally played with and overhook or underhook, and a paw grip to stop the crossface.

93 guard, the top leg has the knee on the opponents chest/shoulder, using a grip at the inside of the knee and a collar grip, the feet are not crossed and the bottom leg is very shallow with the foot turned down to block the shin.

if you have seen what gustavo machado calls quarter guard, 93 guard is identical except with different grips

cool. I have to get this set sometime soon...

After looking at that chart I'm reminded of a Gary Larson "Far Side" cartoon.

See, there is this guy sitting in a class room and he has a really tiny head. He raises his hand and says, "Mr. Allen, can I leave now? My brain is full."

That's how I feel after looking at that chart.

haha, so true...

I find i need to organise stuff like this to make sense of it, knowing when to go for a particular sweep or submission is half the battle. I will concentrate on one branch of the tree at a time. and drill the various sweeps and submissions until they become muscle memory.

It will probably take me 6 months to get a feel for this game properly with all it's options before i move onto my next interest... or i may find i enjoy one particular aspect of this guard that will lead me down a path which i will have to explore through other instructionals.

It's awesome that you're studying it in this way though. I'm glad you posted it, because it gives me an idea of how I can approach some of the videos that I have been watching.

Sure, looking at that chart is a little overwhelming for me, but it bet it actually seems less overwhelming for you because it condenses the hours of video.

I also like that you're planning for the next six months. I plan week to week, but I need to look farther out.

I am not impressed with yo perfomance. Wanna know what would impress me though? Making a chart like that on spiderguard for all the world to see.:D Damn I need to get me this set. You ca creat flowcharts and everything.

Speaking of flowcharts, since Robson now has a flow chart thanks to Codemonkey, I declare this a new style of jiu jitsu. A system if you will. I just need a name. I am torn between "27th Letter Jiu Jitsu" and "Base 11 Jiu Jitsu." This can really take off. Robhino can be the messiah, and just to emphasize the point that it is a brand new style of Jiu Jitsu he can give out socks instead of belts! All we need is a practitioner to run a webste to promote it. I would choose you Codemonkey but I don't think you're jiu jitsu is inept enough for the job.

Think about this people. This can really take off. I can't wait to tell people that I am a Purple Sock under Robson Moura in the Base 11 Jiu Jitsu system. Think of the looks of awe and respect.:D

I saw a reference to the 93 guard a bit back and never followed-up. Funny thing is that a lot of guys in my academy use the thread pass against my Z-Guard or Lazy-man's Guard (Michael Jens reference to 93 Guard position).

I've been using the rolling omoplata and triangle as a counter to the pass for awhile now and have recently been focusing on that position for scissor sweeps (believe it or not I came to these techniques on my own). Little did I know that Robson Moura has a whole set on the position!!!

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, brotha!

How dependent on the gi grips is 93 guard? Would it be effective no-gi (like Z-guard), or is it really a gi-only position?
