it's always been the case. Dominick's success is due to him fighting guys he had a huge reach/height advantage on for his entire UFC career:

Charles Valencia - 5ft3
Ian McCall - 5ft5
Joseph Benavidez - 5ft4
Brian Bowles - 5ft6
Scott Jorgensen - 5ft5
"Trius" Johnson - 5ft3
Uriah Faber - 5ft5
TJ Dillashaw - 5ft6

This was the 1st guy he's fought that's taller than 5ft7. let that sink in.

and the rest of guys he fought punches like this:

You are right his drunken sailor style is extremely ugly, but somehow effective. In terms of skill and technique he's awful imo. No balance, wild swinging punches, sloppy footwork.

effective cause he was fighting borderline midgets

game looks a lot different when it's not a 5ft3 guy staring the cage across you and trying to get his trex arm in your face

Say what you want about cruz, his style is his own, so much so he could say hes created a new fighting system.

To break it down he was one round away from winning.

those pillow punches didnt help him neither last night

He has definitely lost a step or two.

And Cody pulled him out of his game when I thought it would have been the other way around.

Cody stayed on course and did what he needed to do.

Jesus christ, no he hasn't
And the scorecards were wonky. He lost 4 rounds, but even with the bad scorecards he was a round away from a draw.

his balance is terrible, yesterday only amanda and cody put a good striking show, the others were so sloppy

It really is odd how he got as far as he did, sure he's hard to hit but seriously his punches are so damn weird, that strange flailing full on swing motion he does when he goes for a power shot is bizarre and leaves him so open to a counter which Garbrandt saw and got something like 3 of his knockdowns off, you can hit with way more power with a compact swing from a tight angle, reminds me of that scene in the simpsons where Bart and Lisa fight and they just swing both arms towards each other in a winding, circular swimming motion
