So according to Fuji, they classify their sizes according to height AND weight but:

I am just over 6'1 (186cm) but weigh 156.5lb (71kg). Fuji's Judo size 5 is suitable for 5'10 - 6'3 but the weight range is 195-220lbs, which clearly, I am not.

Will this size be too big on me? And why is the weight range so heavy?

Thanks!

I don't have as much experience with judo gis as I do with karate and bjj gis. From looking at your height and weight you are going to have a difficult time getting a gi that fits well. If you get a standard 5 or 6 gi it is going to fit in the length but will be very baggy. It is just the nature of the way these things are made for some reason. These companies think if you are tall you are fat too. If you cannot get an in between size you will either have a gi that is too short that isn't too baggy or a gi that fits your height that is very baggy. If you are just starting get a cheap size 5 judo gi and see if you really enjoy the art. After a few months or years then it is worth spending money on a gi that will fit better.

Would getting a smaller size (4) be okay as I will not be needing to compete as a white belt?
I also have heard people tell me to size down as it will be way to baggy for me.

Fuji gis have can shrink a bit, especially the introductory level ones. I think a 4 would end up being close to a 3 after washing and drying. That will definitely be too small. If you get a 5 you can shrink it intentionally if you need to. With you being over 6' I don't think a 4 is an option.
