So i am slowly starting the pre-producion of my short batman movie project. The plan is to make a short movie (10-15 minutes long). That is more or less one long fight scene with Batman. The goal is to showcase Batman as the true martial artist that he is supose to be.

So just to do some research.. here are some question to the normal batman fan:

1: What is the best look for Batman? When you think about a modern Batman. What does he look like. What bodytype, suit, ect.. Try not to think only about the modern movies that are made. But also the comic. What suit or look was the best for Batman..

Try to describe how you think Batman should fight. What kind of hand to hand style does he use? What did the movie get wrong and right? what was missing.. what would you like to see in the perfect batman fight scene?

What kind of music would fit a short movie with Batman?

good luck. I have my own batman project in the works. Not much experienced with the filmmaking side, but perhaps someone could film my script one day.

I'm not sure if you looked at the recent batman arkham games for inspiration of combat. I think they nailed down some cool combat mechanics in it, perhaps you can borrow from it for some batman beatdowns.

Batman should fight dirty as fuck. Kicks to the groin, strikes to joints, etc. He should throw powder in peoples faces n shit too. Everything should be about ruthlessly incapacitating guys quickly. Batman ain't in this shit to win a decision over the Joker's goons.

I agree. Just thinking very quickly about it: I think a combination of krav-maga, MMA type clinch with dirty boxing, using mma style ground work with dirty strikes to get back up IF the fight goes to the ground. Combine it with the flow you see in JKD and Kali and Escrima.

And then just a few small stuff from Wing Tsung just to spice things up a bit.

add in a Ric Flair chop to the chest, with a "whoooooo" for good measure.

Is it just going to be fighting or gadgets as well? I love me some batarangs to the wrists.

Might be cool to see the TDKR version of Bats in one of these fan films for a change. That way you could have him fight smart and dirty and not need to cast some 10-dan BB to make it come off.

Divide it up into sections, maybe according to setting. Like an open air section, a dark tunnel, close quarters, etc. This way you can feature Batman utilizing his environment, chiefly the shadows, and incorporate parkour style Jackie Chan stunts. One section could have Batman playing the role of victim, where a bunch of people rush him. Another section could have Batman playing the invader, where you'd focus on his opponents fighting against a shadowy Batman.

I think every Batman fight should have a sequence where Batman squares off in a frozen stance for a couple of beats.

Oh, and Batman's gotta do a thing with his bat-grapple. He's gotta crank that spin at hip level.

I saw an interview with a Navy SEAL. The interviewer asked what he thought about killing people. The SEAL said something like, "Those people are targets that get in the way of me completing my objective. When I see a target I engage and move through it".

IMO, that is similar to Batman's mindset. I see that translating into a very dirty, very brutal style of fighting. I kind of see Batman as a fighting like Cain, if Cain mixed in more savate.

Very disappointed- I wanted TS to try to become the batman!

I would add though for your movie, the batman relies of gadgets, so if you are thinking about a 15 minutes fight scene, working in some cool gadget play is essential

Call me crazy, but I feel like a good Batman movie shouldn't have a lot of hand to hand combat. His whole goal is to be the boogeyman of the criminal underworld. He would be taking people out from the shadows, not fist fighting them. In a fight against super criminals, he should be using his gadgets.

Another thing I'd like to see in a Batman movie is a noir style detective story. Think about it, in every Batman movie you know exactly who the villain is, even if you don't understand his motives or how he did it. We know that Batman is the world's greatest detective because occassionally he gets finger prints off of bullets, and, well, that's it. I want to see a real 'whodunit' Batman story.

I agree with you td82394. But this is not a full Batman movie. Just a fight scene. a long one. :)

A 10-15 minute fight scene is going to last an eternity, and will be exponentially more tiring and harder to do than a 2-or-3 minute scene...which is standard length for an action scene. So I would think you'd want to consider doing something much shorter.

Also, when you're scripting it, fight scenes aren't about who wins. They're about WHY the person wins...and what they (or we) learn from it. For one example, "Hero and villain punch each other until the villain falls down" is not the core of a good action scene. "Hero thinks he is not ready, gets beat up, then figures out that he is more powerful than he ever imagined" is.

a mixture of boxing, catch wrestling and japanese jiu jitsu, so classic boxing punches jiu jitsu kicks and pain compliance holds,

Some Judo would be good - I think I remember reading about that in some comic when I was a kid. Also, it looks awesome in fight scenes.

When i say 10 minutes.. that would be not a non-stop fight. But i would also be a intro, moving between different places where batman need to fight. Maybe something like game of death / the raid 1 stuff.

Gonna have to go with "dirty" fighting. Hard kicks to the knee, eye gouging, throat punches.

From a stylistic point of view? Boxing/Kickboxing [punch heavy], wrestling/Judo [in real life, I can't see Batman being particularly flashy]. BJJ/CSW with a focus on brutally ending the fight, so quick.

Batman vs multiple guys? Something along the lines of that video of the guy fighting a bunch of guys in the street. Boxing, moving backwards. Forcing the fight into brief 1 on 1 encounters. I'd post the video, but street fight videos are against the rules.

Search for CRAZY STREET FIGHT! Boxer K.O 4 attackers!! for the exact video.

You have to remember that Batman is still Batman. 1 on 1, he can take just about anyone. With multiple attackers, it'll get a little sloppy.

Movies go wrong because it doesn't seem like anyone who choreographs fights in Hollywood have ever seen a real fight.

As for Batman's costume, try something from previous eras where he didn't seem to be loaded down with armor. Batman thrives on stealth and quickness. Not really an easy task when he seems to be wearing full blown SWAT gear.
