The other day I took a friendly challenge from a co-worker. On Dec 22th we're supposed meet at my gym and with 5 min on the clock, he has to Tap me out.
Here are the stats:
Me
  • Purple Belt with 6.5 year training 2-3x a week consistently. Teach Fundamentals weekly.
  • Able to get in the competition mindset.
  • 52 years old
  • 170 lbs
Him
  • Lots of spin, zumba, Crossfit type training. Good Cardio. Pretty strong. Training for this match with "a guy that does MMA"
  • 37 years old
  • 210 lbs
My coach and team mates don't give him a chance. Being so Critical of myself, I'm moderately optimistic.
My plan is to get on top and stay on top. If I'm on the bottom, I'm going to for leg attacks.

Thoughts??

If you lose to a guy who does zumba, you should probably quit.

As we all know, size > everything, so you're up sh*t creek without a paddle. Better hit those cheeseburgers, bro.

No fresh white belt should be tapping a purple. What sort of shape are you in? Because there are 52 year olds in great shape and there are most 52 year olds!

So, when he loses does he have to sign up for your fundamentals class and pay you for a private lesson?

If not, those should be part of the terms.

Is it a bjj or mma match? Be careful, cuz you may think you're heading into a bjj match, but since he's training MMA, he might hit you and not be surprised.

Drill blast double leg for the next two months, rest will take care of itself

You are 52, it all dependes what shape you are, he’s not tapping you, but he could stall you out, he’s bigger stronger younger than you, so Unledd you are a proeficient judoka/wrestler... he probably has enough to not go down, so sitting on your ass or pulling guard and isn’t a bad thing... you should be able to triangle some untrained dude...

No way he should tap you. Just make sure your cardio is good.

In to hear what happens with this.

He's 15 years younger and 40lb heavier... that's kind of a big deal. Is it pure grappling or striking? Don't leave us in suspense.

Honestly you need to make this worth your time by putting some money on it.

I had a guy do this to me. He was real confident he would win until I put money on it though, then he backed out. Make sure you don't bet until immediately before your match. If nothing else it'll throw him off his game.

I like the cut of your jib!

Make sure It's in the gi. No gi is faster pace, more slippery and more athletic. If you both wear gi you can get your grips and work methodically instead of having a younger and stronger guy jump around on top of you.

If you're a purple belt who trains regularly, I'm sure you'll smoke him.

I've been training for years and purple belts still obviously give me fits. A guy with only a bit of training with "an MMA friend" shouldn't be an issue.

My advice would be to stay calm and let him gas, which he almost certainly will do.

If you train 2-3 times a week with a good consistence, and you even have a decent competition mindset, I can't see you lose.. of course it must be pure grappling, right? No sane gym owner/professor would accept this kind of challenge with kicks and punches..

I don't know how good your takedowns are.. chances are you might have some trouble taking down a very athletic guys, if you aren't a specialist.. if I was in your situation, I'd probably just sit and search for an arm drag or for a leg attack.. or for some de la riva or something he couldn't possibly know how to defend.

Is it a Bjj match, a cjj match or full on MMA? You need to set the ground rules before you start.

Berimbolo is the way to go.

I just might!

I think this was last year.

You'll find out in December after it goes down.

Nah. Bragging rights at work will be totally worth it. Some of our co-workers are coming to check it out.

I'm assuming a NoGi basic BJJ match. No strikes. We'll set the ground rules closer to the event.

Thanks for the inputs. I will definitely ensure my cardio is up to par and won't take anything for granted. If you've had a similar experience, I'd love to read about it. If you have more constructive advice, please share.

Obviously he is gonna come at you hard. Better be in shape both strength and cardio wise

You should pair up with big, spazzy, unpredictable white belts over the next couple of months to prepare.
