Well, not really free speech.. websites are owned and moderated by individuals. But does anyone notice that there's less and less websites where you can say anything you want anymore? 4chan just made a big thing where moderators are no longer allowed to be anonymous and threads are getting deleted left and right, even if they don't break the rules. 4chan is like the last bastion of a place where you could say ANYTHING and post ANYTHING you want.. but that was gone a long time ago. But now, they are turning politically correct.

The government has nothing to do with this, but the general culture is going towards a future where free speech ends where another's feelings begins.

Yes the conditioning of society to self police each other means the state doesn't have to police it directly.

    It's brilliant really.

I expect we will see more public shaming efforts to further entrench this sort of behavior. Make examples out of people and it trains the others how to best behave like good citizens.

I heard something from Sweden that there is a reality TV show about tracking people down that posted a mean thing on the internet and publicly confronting them with TV cameras. This is just the sort of thing that will help entrench a fear of speaking openly because it's all about how things are perceived, and that can vary wildly.

And of course on a TV show they can control the narrative.

I had a sherdog threatened to do bodily harm to me after I've identified myself as a police officer.

That person would never say anything like that to anyone IRL let alone a cop....if he values his freedom.

That's enough Internet free speech for me.

you'll get used to it. I was threatened & even had someone wish terrible things happen to my family all because I'm impartial to the US' relationship with Israel.

How about some examples of how said notorious site is creating a de facto infringement on speech? Those examples will carry more weight if they don't involve illegal pornography, racism and violent rhetoric.

In general, people are getting really fucking tired of certain "open and honest dialogues" and don't want them on their social media and discussion boards. It's a positive development.

Politically correct or they don't want to be sued ? I'll go with the latter. The laws are catching up with technology.

Someone should start the "free speech" message board where the whole shtick is no moderators.

Yep, take Sherdog. Highly moderated. People doing passive aggressive innuendo references at each other.

There are plenty of things you cannot say online. Free speech your *ss.

I have this idea. But it must be hosted not in U.S. and be paid for anonymously. I guarantee if something 'non-moderated' emerges, Feds will try to get their noses involved instantly.

A hosting that cannot be shut down by U.S.....that's a challenge.

There are lots of ways to deter people from talking about thing the government doesn't want them to.

Spamming the hell out of the site, trolling it with bots and paid posters, etc.

I absolutely subscribe to that opinion as well. Feds and other "influence groups" running this and other nations most certainly have online presence.

    Undeniable.

I looked at a pretty good case made that there were Twitter bots running to incite division during the Ferguson protests too. It makes sense really.

The same messages being spammed from a whole bunch of different accounts using language designed to incite and whatnot.

Trolling is a good way to create division and keep people from thinking rationally about things. If vested interests can just use bots to do this it's just too easy.
