Free, easy-to-use video editor?

Do any of you have any recommendations for a free video editor? My son has a project due for school and he shot all the footage on his phone, but now it needs to be cut and spliced. He's never edited before, so the easier it is to figure out, the better.

and yes, I know I can google this shizz, but with free software I'm a little wary of malware, and I trust you douchebags.

i use video shop, it's an app (and costs a couple of dollars), but it's pretty good and easy to use. can do a few things with it, definitely can do what you mentioned in op.
