I am pleased to announce that I have republished Frank Tousey's "How To Box"

As always, the PDF download is free.

How to Box by a Professional Boxer

Frank Tousey, a Publisher of chap book Dime Novels, in 1882 plagiarized Ned Donnelly's "The Art of Boxing" of 1879, attributing it only to "A Professional Boxer."

Tousey's own marketing copy read: "The art of self-defense made easy. Containing over thirty illustrations of guards, blows and different positions of a good boxer. Every boy should obtain one of these useful and instructive books, as it will teach you how to box with-out an instructor."

Thanks for the link! I love all your releases. You are doing a wonderful job bringing all the old texts out into the public again

Good on you for bringing back some of these texts mate!

My pleasure, gentlemen.

I'm unsure of which text to start next. I have three or four boxing manuals in the queue and a classic wrestling+jujutsu manual.

There is already a low-res raw scan pdf of the wrestling manual floating around and at least one of the boxing manuals is fairly rare so, on the one hand, another boxing manual seems like a good idea. On the other hand, I've done three or four boxing manuals in a row now and keep putting off the wrestling manual.

Ah well. Whichever I end up going with, I'll enjoy the process. :)

Peace favor your sword,
Kirk

ive never seen this site before but ive already download 4 books on my love of vintage catch wrestling and early american boxing.
EDIT:This is the greatest website ever!thanks for putting these old books out!

Yeah, I got a chuckle out of that too.

All I can say is that Donnelly says this is his personal weight class breakdown and that (according to him) at the time there was no officially sanctioned weight classes.

I've seen other boxing and wrestling manuals with weight classes that seem similarly odd to modern perceptions.

what does 'peace favor your sword' mean.. if you don't mind me asking?

does that mean that there can only be peace if you have a sword? or is there supposed to be a period after the word 'peace' so it means peace... then a pause... and go live by the sword. kinda like the yin and the yan two contradictions.

Im guessing it means along the lines of always having peace and hoping you never have to use your sword?

Stinkoman pretty much hit it.

To be completely honest (and nerdly) I ripped it off from a novel I read.

It is a benediction that "Peace" bestow its favor upon your sword. IOW, "I hope your sword sees only peace" or "I hope you don't have to use your sword."
