Why did the UFC choose to use Frank Mir?
Or did Frank and Father choose this instead?
I have been curious for quite a while.

He's actually Francisco Santos Mir, III according to wikipedia.

If a meet him one day I'm going to scream FRANCISCO!!!

Mir's father said in an interview that whole Francisco Miranda thing was false.

This is news to me.

The Portuguese Wikipedia still calls him Francisco Miranda and gives this source -> http://www.ufc.com/news/FrankMir-cubano-en-UFC

I'd edit if I could.

Mir's father is Cuban, born of Moroccan immigrants of Russian descent. The surname "Mir" translated from Russian, means "world" or "peace" (depending upon the context). The family name was never "Miranda" as the fighter and his father already explained to the press.[76]

Go to his wiki for the source.

Damn.

From Russia to Morocco to Cuba to USA is quite an family odyssey....

If it comes from Russia, calling him "Mirek" or "Mirko" makes quite a lot of sense.

So, what is on his birth certificate then? Francisco Mir?

UFC 119: Mir(KO) Cro Cop

Happened. Weird right?

He used to pronounce his surname Murr, which makes me believe his first name was most likely Frankincense.

Why is that? Those are not Russian-sounding names. Mironov, however, is.

Francisco Mironov III

his last name is Mir, not Miranda, despite what wikipedia says.
