Like a lot of fight fans, I can think of plenty of good reasons to get upset about Nick Diaz's title shot at UFC 158.

Seriously, I could do it all day. I could just sit here, staring out the window, thinking of reasons why it's a total crock for a fighter coming off a loss, who is currently without a license, who announced his retirement after losing a close decision in his last fight, to fight for the title against UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre immediately upon his return.

sound familiar?

I mean, there's three reasons right there. Here's another: Johny Hendricks. From any logical perspective, where the outcome of one fight decides who participates in the next one, it makes no sense. You don't get a title shot by losing. That's just not how it's supposed to work.

yes, sounds familiar. but...

But still, the more I think about all the very good reasons why this fight shouldn't happen (see previous paragraphs) and the one reason why it should (admit it, seems like GSP-Diaz is going to be pretty awesome), the more I wonder if we aren't kidding ourselves to think that some logical system of rules has ever had anything to do with this business at all.

and the one reason we should....it's going to be pretty awesome.

Agreed it'll be pretty awesome... For GSP fans.

Diaz fans eh not so much.

It will look very similar to Gsp vs Condit. Minus the high kick and Gsps face will be less bruised.

Because we like to reward bad behavior.

I will admit, as much as I dislike Nick, putting him in against GSP is good business. Nick is compelling, and it will sell. The controversy from top to bottom will boost revenue.

I wonder if Nick will screw it all up again by running away.

Title shots after losses are just plain old bad for the sport. Fighters are suposed to climb up the ladder to a title shot, not fall down the ladder to a title shot!

Good point.. How bad would it be if they pass on Hendricks for Diaz and he no shows again..

I thought champions never pick their opponents?

So we're supposed to care about this guy complaining just as everybody else has?

As if this thread hasn't been made already.

Good point by Fowlkes.

And it's not like GSP vs. Diaz match-up is that preposterous. BJ Penn challenged Matt Hughes for the WW Title following a close decision loss to GSP (much like Nick lost a closely contested decision to Condit). Granted, it was due to GSP's injury but I am simply using this example to highlight that there is a precedent for this kind of thing.

Dana has said the only reason its being made is because GSP "asked for it"

What happens if GSP asks for Colton Smith? Are they going to set that match up?

Diaz is a top guy and he was supposed to get a title shot before, he fucked it up, and he's still talked about GSP and GSP still wants to fight him. I hate how people talk out of their ass on here sometimes.

Well there you go....

The analogy is dramatic yes but it still goes to show why the match was made, based on dumb logic and a fake rivalry.

Just don't forget the fact Nick can actually do something off his back unlike Condit. Whether he can submit Georges remains to be seen but we will find out, won't we?

Opps forgot about injury bug. So who the fuck knows if this will truly even happen.

GSP wants this fight and it will sell much better than any fight aside from a superfight with anderson

I strongly believe Gsp will be able to shut any offence from Diaz when in top control.

I'm sick of people telling me how to feel about this fight. It's BS that this fight is happening and nobody will ever convince me otherwise. The reason everybody seems to be giving is "there were never any rules to determine title shots to begin with" or some garbage variation on that. I may or may not agree with there are no set rules, but maybe it's time we start having reasonable guidelines or rules and not garbage like this guy sure can mouth off and use twitter let's give him a title fight.
Please keep the pro-wrestling out of MMA.
Diaz doesn't deserve the fight.
Hendrick deserves the fight.

I agree. However, as long as Dana is running the show this is how it is going to be. There are a few positives: should be an exciting fight & the trash talk coming from Nick should be great.

I agree fully that to get a shot off a loss is stupid, but to get a shot after losing the fight in which you needed to win to get the shot makes even less sense. There was no point in Condit Diaz if both got shots anyway.
