It seems like the formula for success when challenging a dominant champ is for the challenger to get in the champs face in the first round and not let the champ get into a normal rhythm.

Examples:

Anderson vs Weidman - Chris took Silva down and land some hard ground and pound and also showed no fear on the feet.

GSP vs Hendricks: Hendricks landed some vicious elbows when GSP had him pressed against the cage and won the round according to many people (GSP almost never lost rounds)

Jones vs Gus: Gus came out right from the start and boxed Jones up and even landed a take down.

Barao vs Dillashaw: Dillashaw landed a huge shot and almost finished Barao.

I can't remember the last time I have seen a champ have a good round 1 and then go on to lose?

Do you think it is critical for the challenger to do something big in round 1? What other things have you picked up on that successful challengers have shown?

TJ was extremely calm in there, helped him alot imo

Land the face punch on your opponent while avoiding them from him. Works every time.

Yeah, starting off strong is always a plus, but I think it's too hard to predict a fight on a strong start.

I know it's not MMA, but look at Buster Douglas upsetting Tyson. He arguably got finished, had the ref not counted so slow, before he eventually KO'd Tyson.

I'm sure you can think of many fights where the dominant champ started strong, and eventually lost.

But I definitely agree that it increases the chance of causing an upset.

2 of your examples don't work. GSP beat Hendricks and Jones beat Gus! So your formula for success is only 50% successful.

I believe I'm the drunkest person on Sherdog right now. Between the Lagunitas, Hamms, Mickeys, and Lone Star beer I am shit hammered. And I am proud. I just used an Oxford comma. 'Cause I'm an old school linguistic gangsta. Straight up, fools.

Yes if you fight the champ like they are just another guy it can work. You could also get your ass beat so idk?

They had a lot of success compared to anyone else meaning they fought well and a lot of people thought the won. I didn't say formula for victory.

Clearly this means the real formula is coming out strong in the first round AND not leaving the fight in the hands of the judges.

True in all instances except Silva vs Sonnen 1.

seems like one of the keys is to believe in yourself bc the champ has a ton of hype behind him on top of being a great fighter

Wait .........................so you're saying......................that coming out AGGRESSIVE......................in a FIGHT might lead to a higher chance of success???....................
