Hey guys, trying to get this looked at by a doc but just wondering if anyones experienced this before and has any idea what it is.

Seems to reoccur around christmas time (for the last 3 years) or every so often when im doing heavy lifting, or trying to push/pull during bjj. I work in retail so christmas= heavy lifting, which coincides with the reoccurence. Now that ive taken up BJJ its kind of affecting my training as well.

anyway, about 4-5 inches up from my wrist on my ulna (?) of my left arm (left bone when you have your arm palm down) on the outside (part of the bone which would be facing down if you were karate chopping), I experience a fair bit of pain when lifting anything over a couple of kg's (basically anything that causes me to have to brace my arms or let them hang). Almost feels like the bone is separating and often it causes me to experience extreme weakness in that arm for a minute or so afterwards.

Sometimes it also aches and if i "bend" the forearm using my other hand it sometimes pops or clicks. If i run my fingers along the bone i can feel a slight ridge, but this could just be tissue.

Im thinking stress fractures but a friend also suggested forearm tendonitis, but due to it feeling like its the bone, or right next to it im leaning toward fracture.

Like i said, ill be visiting a doctor but was just wondering if anyone else had experienced it and knows off the top of their head?

  • Pain in the forearm area. Check
  • Swelling, redness or burning in the forearm. Check
  • Stiffness and inability to move forearm freely. Check
  • Pain at night and early in the morning. Check
  • Difficulty performing hand movements (eg, making a fist). Check
  • Grinding sounds when you move and rotate your forearm. Check

Sounds very much like this might be it. Im going to have to have a chat to my boss about it, because i cant keep lifting stuff while im trying to fix it. Im at this moment getting ready to take pain tabs because my arm is throbbing so badly. Just finished work.

Yea i get a pain in my forearm sorta like this, it feels like a needle is being stuck in my bone, it really fucking hurts, mayb i should get it checked out, i usually just blow it off

I had this for several years and I've been a year without it- I even posted awhile back how to fix it-
here's my advice in a nutshell-

Primary-
Tape your pinky and ring finger right in front of the knuckle and when its aching do this when you sleep- also do this while training. This will reinforce that weakness.

Secondary-
Video games, lifting, typing, BJJ etc- these things all tax your hands and wrists and grip- re-prioritize what you do with your hands- I do BJJ and some working out and try to type less- but I set a 1 hour max now on video games- I like BJJ so much.... (not gonna type the rest

I get this. I think it's a combination of holding on to guy's gi's when I train, and from getting arm barred. I used to get the same pain when I weightlifted. I'd either try to work through it, and make sure I stretch my wrists, or if the problem didn't improve in a couple of days, I'd take a few days off.

I've played guitar for about 17 years, and I do these warm ups to guard against developing carpal tunnel.

Im gonna buy some sports tape and a bandage before i start BJJ tonight and tape my fingers and compress the arm slightly like is suggested in the first link. its only a fundamentals class i go to sometimes so wont be too overtaxing.

+1 for tendinitis. Take a good dose of tylenol, if that relieves it somewhat then its tendinitis for sure.

I had a very similar pain in the exact location multiple times. Today infact. lol. Usually comes about from heavy GI grips. Tylenol helps a ton and giving it a weeks rest does wonders aswell. Just in case maybe take your Vitamin D/Calcium and maybe a Chondroitin/Gluco/MSM supp.

See a doctor he can give you 100% positive answer and put your worries to rest.

Tylenol will in no way help it out, it's only for pain relief, and besides it's bad for your liver. Take aloe and get some emu oil, that will help with the inflamation. And +1 for the r&r.

Tendinitis is inflammation of your tendons tylenol does indeed help it out as it is an anti-inflammatory. It's bad for your liver if taken in large doses, that is true. Maybe alor and emu oil is good long term solution but it won't take away tendinitis pain and inflammation as fast as tylenol.

This is from my personal experience and with approval of a doctor. I never took Tylenol before I started BJJ/Judo btw.

Im australian, so tylenol is completely out of the question anyway. I dont think its sold here

Sounds like a stress fracture. I had one, went away after like 6 months.

Lol. Sir, check your info, acetaminophen (tylenol) is not an anti-inflammitory, you are confusing it with ibuprofen or aspirin. It is merelly a fever reducer or pain reliever. It will only take care of the symptom, pain, but not the problem, inflamation. Acetaminophen Overview

Edit: I personally object to taking Tylenol while training, as the lack of feeling pain will result in aggrivating the injury even more due to overuse.

i went and had a chat to the local pharmacist (My docs on holidays atm). He said it could be either tendonitis or a stress fracture but reckons its most likely tendonitis.
Gave me Voltaren (aka diclofenac, strongest over the counter anti inflammatory available here) and told me to get to the doctor asap.

$5 for a pack of 10 tablets at roughly 3 tablets a day.

I used to suffer quite badly from this after grip fighting. I did two thing to correct it, strengthened my grip and increased tendon strength in my elbows.

- Grip Strength: Towel Pullups/I Rows, Squeezy ball squeezes :) or Captains of crush.
- Elbow tendon strength: Get a band like an Iron woody band (I use the blue for this), attach one end to a dumbell (start with 20kgs and work up as you get stronger) and the other end to an Olympic bar. Put the olympic bar in the pins of the rack and let the dumbell dangle to the floor. Now grip the bar and turn it to wind the dumbell up off the floor, once at the top, wond it back down slowly and repeat.

I have tendonitis in both arms. I apply hot and packs. Advil is my best friend. It only happens when I train bjj 5-6 times a week or when I do heavy lifting.
