For you guys thinking Shogun is finished, beating him still means something for UFC officials...

If you analyze the last losses Shogun had and the fights guys had after him, it was always a meaningfull fight.
Gustafsson went to the title shot, even without facing Mousasi, Sonnen had a big fight with Rashad(shad was at 3 at the time), Hendo a big one with Cormier(title eliminator) and SaintPreux, although facing Cummins next, do u still think he wouldve got the interim title shot without beating a former champ? It shows the guy is legit.

Shogun is somehow the Michael Bisping nowadays of the LHW division, you have to beat him to make that final run towards gold. If Corey Anderson beats him, he will be close to the gold, to tell the truth!
1 or 2 more fights and he could be fighting for the belt.

He's been given gatekeeper status which is sad to watch as the 2nd best LHW of all time.

It looks like Anderson Silva is turning into that role now as well. I'd prefer guys retain their legacy and not be fodder for up and coming fighters but that's life.

You realize how long ago some of those fights took place?

that just makes it sadder really: that's he is a stepping stone.

From potential goat to gatekeeper and still 34...

From p4p champ to top 15 "rankings" gatekeeper

As soon as he was booked to face James Te-Huna on an Australian FN card, he gatekeeper status was realized. Subsequent bookings against Jimi Manuwa and Corey Anderson only cemented the fact.

No doubt his name means something in the UFC, his past achievements speak for themselves as any Shogun fan will tell you.

I'm pretty sure they set up DC/Hendo just to guarantee DC a shot at the title. DC's two fights at LHW before Jones were Pat 'Patrick' Cummins and Hendo...

All veterans should go to Bellator/Rizin IMO. Without USADA testing, a lot of these guys can still put on good fights I bet.

Would love to see Shogun jacked on TRT and take the heavyweight gold.

Shogun is strange. He's seemed like he's been not himself/finished for a long time. Since around the time he joined the UFC

Honestly, I don't really see how a win over shogun means anything, even in the examples you gave.

Gus didn't get a shot because he beat Shogun, he got a shot because Jones had beaten everyone else, and he was an interesting challenge due to his size.

Chael was a middleweight, who destroyed shogun after being mauled by Jones, his fight against Rashad hardly meant anything, and that was after Rashad have fallen off. That was basically just to give Rashad a bounce back win, it wasn't a serious fight.

A great name that was used as a stepping stone to promote other fighters by Zuffa.

So the opposite of your statement seems to be true imo.

Shogun is pretty much just a reconizible name on a resume at this point

Bisping is at a much better place than Shogun at this points of their careers, at least Bisping isn't completely shot.

Corey Anderson will be victim to another highlight reel KO. War Shogun!!

He's a goatkeeper....there...I said it. :)

I loved watching his old Pride fights. There is speculation that Shogun put too many miles on in the gym and that prematurely diminished his fighting career. 34 years old and he isn't really a serious threat to the elite of the LHW division. Given the weight cutting in the UFC, I also think he was always better off, as Wandy was, in the MW division.
