I don't think Kim Jong-Un fancies the job that much. If there was a viable "out" for him, I wouldn't be surprised to see him take it. But essentially, he had two choices. To become the dictator of the country, or to get purged by the military brass because he was part of a bloodline. He chose to be ruthless, brutal and to cling onto life by seizing power.

Him trying to go rogue like his brother, would've ended no differently for Kim Jong-Un, than it did for his brother. Take Kim out of the equation, and you still have a cold-blooded military regime to deal with.

If you want to truly change North Korea, you do not only take out Kim, but also the entire military structure which is closely involved in the political decision-making of the country.

I always thought Un developing the nukes so fast and somehow without Chinas approval was so that he could use them for himself as a personal bargaining chip with the Chinese to get Asylum.
That would be a desirable outcome for most parties. Kim gets Asylum in China gives up the nukes. The Chinese make a puppet state out of NK and purge all the military people that don't play ball.
