So, can we safely say now that flyweight rankings mean very little?

Ulysses Gomez was ranked number 10 in the world, but in two UFC fights has looked perhaps the most average guy in the division. Knocked out in a few minutes, then gets what should have been a gimme, and looks terrible against a British journeyman.

IMO, flyweight is so thin right now that top 10 rankings don't really mean anything - how many flyweights are actually plying their trade in say, North America? I'll go for 40-50 tops.

Look at Uncle Creepy, number 1 in the world and he's 0-1-2 in the UFC while showing very little of his talent. Perhaps these guys looked better, simply because there were less of them.

Anyone else disappointed with Gomez this weekend? I thought he'd wipe the floor with Harris!

The less flyweights the better. Hopefully the division will die off, as will the WMMA division after Ronda loses. Again, hopefully.

McCall isn't a very good example considering his only opponents have been two former Bantamweight title contenders and the two top guys at Flyweight. He was very competitive against them, too.

the UFC flyweight rankings don't reflect on the full division depth, they don't have yamaguchi, Montague, Dustin Ortiz etc, all 3 of those are top 10 i'd say

Dustin Ortiz is not top 10 and should have lost his last fight. Replace him with Sampo.

The case of Mccall just shows why rankings don't mean anything, and betting lines do. Mccall may have been "ranked" high, but he was a significant underdog to both Johnson and Benavidez.

Gomez was ranked and was the favorite due to public ignorance regarding Harris and Moraga. A mere placeholder until other guys came around (and beat him)

Are you using UFC rankings, then calling them the world rankings? A lot of the OP is flawed logic.

He is using the UFC's rankings and Useless was only ranked in the top 10 because they have thirteen flyweights on their roster.

i reckon Ortiz could beat Harris and Useless, and i forgot Sampo, he's definitely UFC caliber

He can but Harris isn't top 10 either. The division right now is like the featherweight division was when Josh Grispi was ranked top 10. A lot of these guys won't make the final cut.

Actually, I forgot that the UFC's rankings only include UFC fighters! Doh. So I guess this thread can be deleted, haha! Sorry for wasting your time guys, stupid error.

Was Gomez ranked top 10 outside of the UFC, though? I think he was highly-rated at least?

I'll change the thread title, and subject - was anyone else disapponted with Gomez? Forget the rankings thing.

Yeah true, still it wouldn't hurt the UFC to get some depth, i prefer flyweight fights over some divisions.

People like you are why there should be a mandatory license to breed.

Answering the thread, how many flyweights does the UFC even have? And you used their rankings TS? Come on.

and it's actually eleven fighters since they rank the champion. Aside from Harris, Tim Elliot is the only flyweight not currently ranked by the UFC. Poor Tim.

And yet, Elliott probably beats everyone not called MM or Benavidez. These rankings are fucking weird.

It must suck being a UFC flyweight and not be ranked hahahaha.
